Distance from home - should it be a problem?

I live right down on the south coast (near Bournemouth). I am really keen on applying to Durham University (2005 entry), but i know it would take ages to get there. At a talk i went to the man said a general rule is don't go so far away that your parents can come and see you and get back home without taking the whole day to do so. Seeing as i am relatively shy and may get homesick and it is such a long way away (and i hate trains) do you think i should discard Durham from my possible choices list?

it depends very much on your personality! if you want a completly fresh outlook, complete adventure then why not choose durham or somewhere far away! if you want to go home at weekends alot then somewhere closer is probably more suitable! if your parents what to come visit you they will not worry about distance as long asyou are happy!

i live in a village near Oxford and the closest uni i applied to was liverpool which is about 4 hours! i guess im quite independant and quite out going always looking for new things so going far away suited me! im hoping to go to St andrews! which is far enough away that ill be forced to be independent but not too far that if everything turns tits up i can run away n get a plane home!

if you look at durham and say yes i can see myself here go for it! youll make friends!

do what suits you

If you're going to get on a train for two hours to get to one uni, what's another two or three hours for a good education ?

id say it depends on what you want.

everyone gets homesick, but it depends on whether you'd prefer to ride it out or go home. being far away can be a bonus if you are particularly homesick as you *cant* go home easily.
