This has been driving me crazy.

A garden is 2/3 the area of an acre. 1/4 of the garden is dedicated to growing vegetables. What fraction of an acre is this?

Is the answer 1/6 (2/3 x 1/4)?

what exactly has been driving you crazy?

1/4 of a garden which is 2/3 the area of an acre
=> 1/4 of 2/3
=> 1/4 * 2/3
=> 2/12
=> 1/6

what has been driving me crazy is how can I explain it. I done it by doing:

1 = 2/3
1/4 = x

then I crossed multiplied to find x:

x = 2/3 * 1/4 = 2/12 = 1/6

how would you explain it?

You can say area of the garden = 2/3. 1/4 of the area of the garden = x. 2/3 * 1/4 = x. x=1/6.

I understand but the person I am explaining it to doesn't. Maybe I can use like a diagram?

Haha no I'm not, I'm a 14 year old year 10 :') basically, draw a garden. Then say the area=2/3 acre. Then in a different colour draw a quarter of that and show them that 6 of those fit in the whole thing.

draw a grid with 12 squares.
the grid represents the acre

lightly shade in 2/3 of the grid (i.e. 8 squares) to represent the garden.
then darkly shade in 1/4 of those 8 squares (i.e. 2 squares) to represent the vegetable patch.

then say that you can fit those 2 squares into an acre 6 times.
