Pretty much as title, I've got an offer there for next year grades permitting, would be interested to know how other colleges view it etc... seems nice central location.

Tealer

Don't know a great deal about it. Yes it has got a nice central location, however I think it's got large accomodation blocks outside the city centre near its sports fields up Cowley Road. These are obviously new and hence plush but a bit out from the centre. Don't know if they go to 1st years or other years. Historically known as the 'Welsh college' there is still an element of truth in that - you'll find a higher proportion of Welsh people there than at other colleges but its not like you'll be in a minority if you're not Welsh. They also have a bit of a friendly rivalry with Exeter which is understandable since their front doors practically face each other....

It has a reputation for looking after its students well. It's rich and generous, so you can look forward to book and travel grants etc. I think owns the leases to a proportion of the shops on Cornmarket. Hall is quite good too.

I got a really nice letter saying how they hoped I got my grades etc... I applied for biological sciences. How about yourselves, which courses did you go for?

Regards,
Tealer.

P.s. didn't get invited for weekend which is good as I couldn't go!
P.p.s. Welsh college eh? We'll have to see about that!!

Jesus - on Turl St which is really pretty. Aesthetically it's justlike a basic Oxbridge college - quadrangles, staircases, hall, etc. Medium sized, I think. In my expereince the bar is usually quite crowded and sweaty, but that might just have been on the occassions I ended up there (!). Jesus is like Fort Knox to break into if you're from another college. Known for being extremely politically apathetic, but that suits some people I guess. All-in-all, nice enough college (if a little non-descript).

Its very pretty and the quads are lovely .. but it can get very noisy early in the morning when they start making deliveries to the market on the road off Turl St!

I agree, the Turl St colleges are very pretty (though the prettiest, in my view, is Lincoln, not Jesus. Lincoln's absolutely gorgeous).

wouldnt the fact that the accomodation is 2 miles from the college detract from the atmosphere? i mean there would only be the 1st years in college most of the time wouldnt there? ofc this would change for tutorials during the day, but be back to just the first years after the tutorials had finished? or am i just being stupid and missing something?
Jesus is nice although I only know 1 person from there. Of course, the real reason why you should want to go is because Harold Wilson did PPE there!

But the name is so twee....
Jesus does suffer a little from having its second-year accommodation a long way from college - but not hugely. It's partly made up for by the fact the Woodstock Road and Bartlemas rooms are rather nice. It probably suffers more from having its bar directly underneath its library.

One thing definitely worth mentioning about Jesus is that it has perhaps the university's best book acquisition system. You inform the librarian that you need a book, and you are provided with book vouchers to go and buy it immediately from Blackwell's down the road, after which you keep it for a term or so before giving it to the library! As if that wasn't enough, when books are thrown out to make space for new ones, they are made available for free to the students.

Jesus tries to emphasise in-college teaching; this has the inevitable effect that you'll often find yourself in a small group. Many people end up as the only person in their year studying a particular subject there, and tutorial groups of one are also common. Whether this is a good or a bad thing depends upon your work ethic!

It has a free pool table! But it's often broken. :frown:

is the accomodation really that far from the college? because i have heard all sorts of figures. how long would it take to walk/ bike to either?
emzie
ive been to the furthest one, it was a 1 min bus ride, takes about 10 min to cycle slowly I would guess. not that far!

lol, I think 1 minute is an excessively modest estimate of the bus time
