working out is bad for you

i've just been for a 20 minute run. Its nine in the morning when i left

Why would anyone do this for fun, my backs killing me my legs feel cramped, im sweating like im being steamed or something, i can barely breathe, i feel like im about to have a hernia or something, my visions gone a bit blurry. I thought i was gonna pass out or something equally as smart. Why the hell would someone put themselves through this?

Please tell it gets easier

and before ayone says it yes i know im seriously unfit. Now wheres my bacon fried bread sandwich and cigarettes?:p:

do you not excerise often? that would probably be the reason.. i feel like crap even if i run for a few minutes. i ache, i can't breathe, i get a headache.. it's probably because i don't excerise at all, so when i do bother, it feels horrible.

if you want to start working out and running, take it a bit at a time. one day go for a 10 minute run... next day 15 minutes... etc etc and build it up.

Why the sodding hell did you go for a 20-minute run when you're seriously unfit, you silly, silly person. :p: I wouldn't go for a 20-minute run at the best of times. Go and stand outside and take some fresh air in till you're feeling better. Then, tomorrow, or later, try going for a 20-minute walk, and repeat this process many times, gradually working up to a long walk, then a jog, then a run. And even then don't start on 20 minutes. And only then will it get easier.

Well it's probably bad for you because you overtrained doing 20 minutes. (Too much for you I imagine). But the title did make me laugh, ah the naive fat generation.

Also, most people don't go out for a run until they feel like they are going to faint. You can work your cardiovascular system without going over the top like you have.

Fitness is not something you can just suddenly achieve, it has to be built up over a period of time.

First thing is make sure you stretch off, both before and after you exercise, this is very very important!

Dont expect to run for 20 mins the first few times! Try running for maybe 10 minutes everyday for a week, then increase that to 15 for a week...

The first three or maybe four or five days will make your legs ache like **** dont be afraid, this is normal. Suddenly you will reach a stage where you are cumfortable and this wont happen, sometimes takes a week!

I do alot of fitness training for my sailing, I compete in national and international events and fitness is totally key! I have just returned from my world championships in italy and the 6 weeks before the event i stepped up my fitness, so that I were running 40 mins cycling 40 mins and on the rowing machine 15 mins every other day! Seems mad, but once you are ontop of it, then its fine!

Remember running on hard surfaces such as roads is not good for your joints! You are much better running on grass or soft ground!

Gooood Luck and try to have fun!, but remember take it slow!

Exactly. I hate people who think they are some sort of superman and go to the gym, with the hope of lifting heavy weights and being on the exercise machines for a good while or so with no previous training.

oh gods no i dont think like that, i thought a twenty minutes easy run would be ok, its my second day doing it.

oh and IM NOT FAT, im just carrying a little christmas wieght heh heh. (joke)
i just wanted to lose like half a stone to tone up a little without building up too much muscle

Well you were going over the top on that run. Also, a lot of people enjoy the feeling that they are working themselves, knowing that they will get stronger because of it.

If you can manage 20 minutes then do it, forget what these people say, its really good for you. I remember doing this circuit training thing until i was actually physically sick into a bucket, my trainer guy thought it was completely normal

Anyway lol if youre just trying to loose a bit of weight and youre not training for the olympics or something you dont need to go all out. The pains in youre legs and back will get less and less as you get use to it (they can be really bad if you've not done any exercise for months.) The "hernia" was probably just a stitch (lesson number 1: dont eat before you go running ) the blurry vision might have been dehydration (take a bottle of water with you when you go running.) The sweating and getting out of breath is normal and you get to quite like it after a while (i think the endorphin kick gets better as your fitness improves)

Surely you feel a sense of achievement after going for a run? that makes up for all the pain. And its worth it in the end

I started running again about 3 weeks ago. I started off jogging about 10 minutes, then built it up to 15. Now i can run 25 minutes no problem. I am out of breath at the end and sweating - but not as bad as you obviously were. Think you need to get back to basics before trying to run for a relatively long period of time.

Working out really is bad for you. MY old physics teacher Mr Groat, told us one of his horribly depressing stories, this one about one of his friends. Apparantly, he was such a fit-fanatic, working out nearly all the time, that his back muscles got so big that he became paralysed as they broke the spinal cord. Obbviously, this is an extreme case, but the message is the same. Dont work out for too long a time, or too strenuously. You can do yourself real harm.

haha sounds a little too 'urban legend' for me but even if it is true you shouldnt worry about that. Most people dont have the genetics to become bodybuilders anyway. To become that muscular takes years and years of intense weighlifting. Jogging really isnt dangerous :p:

It is really hot today aswell though, so take that into consideration!

Decrease your exercise intensity initially, and build up on it. They didn't build London in one day, and you certainly won't build fitness of an athlete after one!

It does get better.

What type of work out are you looking for? Increasing muscle bulk or increasing stamina?

Edit:

In order to tone up you must have *some* muscles first. It's funny seeing really skinny guys walking around London without their shirt on, and just because they have practically 0% body fat their body is "toned". What a joke.

I think you are worried that by working out your muscles a few times you will increase your muscle bulk significantly (and perhaps be 'out of proportion'?), let me tell you that it takes months of regular exercise and workout plans coupled with a very strict diet (I'd say diet is 80% of body building).

I suggest you sign up to the gym and go 3-4 times a week, 3 days doing weights followed by 20 min running /cycling and on one day do pure cardio (swimming/running/cycling).

20 minute run? And you call that a working out? Well maybe you are not used to it yet so no problem anyway well it is best for you to warm up first NOT STRECTH people seem to think you do stretching before exercise actually you are suppose to do it after exercise as a cool down or it can be bad for your body.

Anyway well from your description of what occur it seem that you sort of push or over push yourself there mate, take it easily you need to be consistent and gradual you ant just expect things to turn up after one 'working out'. So 20 mins maybe a lil bit hard than go for a 10 minute run first, after 10 minutes rest between 30secs-2minute than go for another 10 mins do this like 3 sets a day and maybe about 3 days in a week and after you confident that you can go more after 1-2 week than increase the bar by going for a 15mins.

Bacon fried bread sandwich is ok for the diet but never a cigarrette also sometime you need to watch out for the weather condition in when are you going to workout, for me the only weather condition that could prevent you from doing a workout/exercise is if it is very hot as it could be dangerous and as always drink plenty of water. Hope that help.

that was a joke. I changed my diet i dont eat anythign fried and im eating more greens and im not trying to bodybuild, just shed a few pounds.

and about 0% body fat sounds good to me heh heh (im kidding), im not joining a gym forking out who knows how many hundreds of pounds a year when theres a road right outside my house

Im no expert but excercise isn't all fun and games, no pain no gain, its good you've pushed yourself, it'll get easier from hereon in. First time i started running i had a similar experience i felt sick for about 5 hours, by the third day, after running the same amount it wasnt painful at all. Its worth it.
