Finance vs Software jobs

In general, which one is considered the best route to go down in terms of progression, earning potential etc? Finance (not including banking) or Software engineering?

I've noticed that starting salaries for finance jobs tend to be lower than that of software jobs but I've heard that once you've qualified as an accountant or done some other finance qualification, salary rises fast.

Arguably software is better because you gain skills of actually building and creating things, skills that would be useful in creating your own product/business. Whereas in finance you're likely to be somebody else's monkey for a long time. Though finance is generally safer in terms of job security. Depends what you want from a career tbh.
