Becoming a primary school teacher - qualifications?

I am currently in my first year of sixth form, studying English literature, media studies and history and I would like to become a primary school teacher. I am thinking first of doing a year as a teaching assistant and then taking a work-based or part-time PGCE at one of my local colleges.

The only thing is, that because of medical reasons I do not have a science GCSE, which I probably do need, am I right? I am in the process of seeing if I can take one of the controlled assessments (I got Cs in the exams) which may solve everything. If that was not possible, I could take a course either at college or via the Open College. If I was to take Psychology or Sociology, would that still count as a science or does it have to be a general science GCSE?

Do I actually need a science GCSE or could I do a foundation course (which does not ask for science) and progress from there? Would I still need science for a PGCE? If I took an access course, would that cover me for the science?

I know half of this probably does not make any sense but thank you in advance!
