i ran for 40 mins for three days in a row, then i had a days break to help muscles repair which meant two nights sleep. Now i should be running again, but i find that if i press my legs a certain way, they tend to ache and feel a bit sore, is it safe to run on them or should i leave the recovery period a bit longer?

just keep going til you feel the burn.

ignore the old phylosophy "no pain no game", an extra day off from running isnt going to do any harm to your overall goal, and its better than doing urself an injury thatll take 6 months to heal (believe me, you dont want that). If you have to run today, then make it a shorter/slower run than usual, and make sure you warm up and stretch.

Thats exactly what you shouldnt do, running until your leg burn what kind of advice is that? It is hard to determine whether the sore you have is muslce trying to adapt to the new condition or your muscle is tired of the exercises you had been doing. Well to test which is which I suggest you do the same exercise that you had been doing but decrease the level of intenisty of the workout than after few days if there are no more sore than it is only muslce trying to adapt to the new condition or if you still feel sore I think you need to rest a lil bit more by the way I think you can improve your workout days. Make it 1 day run for 40 mins than the next day rest and the next 2 day run for 40 mins than rest for a day, etc.

These boards are so wishy washy it's un****ingbelievable. Just run damnit. Run through the pain. When I used to be in training I could run about 6 miles a day 6 days a week. I know the exact pain you mean, but you definately come out the other side and/or grow used to it. It's really no biggy. It's when you start feeling twinges as in your muscles or hamstring when you should stop running. That's why you stretch before hand to minimise the possibility of pulling a muscle. But Christ keep going and don't listen to these imbeciles.

No pain no gain. You have got to focus, be confident and shouldn't ask these kind of questions! It's obviously going to fatigue you a bit but you have got to keep at it. This 'tenderness' you feel when you press your legs is expected. Run through it / with it. It'll take sometime before you get through it but keep going and you'll do fine.
my mum always said the way to get rid of the pain is to redo what caused it! so carry on running!

don't panic, are you running miles and miles and miles on end? if not don't worry about it! Just wear an ankle support

Plus, take a hot bath after you come home, and DO NOT sleep for atleast 2 hours.

Have a walk around the house every 20 minutes. The pain will go away in no time!

Well, if putting on a blanket doesn't work, try wearing an ankle support.
But remember to try the horse thing first!
