You dont have count on reversing in first time. Its better to just reverse in, perpendicular from the bay, just reference using preception, with practice its easy, and once your into the bay (doesnt matter if your not in the middle of the bay, or even over the lines if theres not another car adjacent), drive stright out again for about 5m to 10m and then reverse stright back into the bay. I find it much easy when reversing to put my left arm round the passeagers seat, and the other on the steering wheel obvisouly, that way you can see more square out the tail gate window and make a better attempt of it. or i think your can stick your head out of the window which is ok untill you crack your head open on a lampost plus you cant see the other side of the car at all

I was taught to count 3 lines down from the space as you do (I think from what you describe). Always worked for me, perhaps you were just having an off day!

I was taught to line the back seat up perpendicular with the near line of the bay.

Yeh...agreed with chris, it is much easier to put your left arm round the passenger seat and reverse, I know i can do it without, but it just feels alot easier to do it with the arm! I don't know what the rules of this are in your test as you do not have both arms on the wheel...

Basically i get into the middle of the road, about half a car length from the desired spot, reverse back for about half a car length adding lock as req'd till i am kinda in the space, then pull out again and reverse straight back. Its really easy once you get the hang of it, its just practice!

I don't tend to line anything up btw, i just tend to kinda guesstimate, i know how big the car is and how wide it is, i can judge how big the space is and then work out how much room i have! This is all spatial awareness though and it is proven that men have much better spatial awareness than women, also not sounding to be to big headed but i am also a trainee RAF pilot so i am in the top 1% of the population for Spatial awareness so er...use the lining up method for safety i think is probably best, i just found it an a$$ to get along with and just did better without it, lol!!

Good question! Just sort of do it now without paying attention how i do it. I seem to remember something about a door handle though.

 my dads new car (06 Toyota Prius) has automatic parking, reverse bay and parallel

I don't know why but sometimes I find it 100 times easier reversing into a space then going forwards. Few other people I know feel the same.

I usually just use the drivers door mirror and treat it like reversing round a corner with the car in the next bad acting as the kerb works every time for me

I was told to put on full lock when the back of my car reaches the middle of the car next to the spot your parking in....always works for me.

I was told to line up the door handle with a line. Cant remember which line. Now I just do it. Although I often just go in forwards out of sheer laziness

i see people talking about lining up the wing mirror with the line of the bay. iwas taught to line the wing mirror up with the middle of the bay before the one you want. i dnt see how lining it up with the line of the bay you want to park it will work, surely thats far too late???

I was taught the '3 lines past the space, lined up with the handle' method for reversing left. For reversing right it was also 3 lines past the space but my instructor had a strip of green tape for the marker. When I reverse-parked to the right a couple of months after passing my test I just tried to remember roughly where the marker had been, but I was getting too close to the car on my left so had to drive forwards and to the right a bit before reversing back in.

I usually find it easier to reverse in too.

3rd line on the passenger's door handle works perfectly for me, but it's different in every car you drive... Try it in a quiet car park and if you get it wrong, pull out and have another go with a different reference point!
