Chemotherapy can cause myelosuppression which leads to a reduction in the number of white blood cells thereby leaving the patient more susceptible to developing infections.

As the above said, assuming that the cancer patient is on chemotherapy as a potential treatment. Some cancers can down-regulate the immune response by stimulating t-regulatory cells and thus suppress the NK cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes. You can also get cancers of the immune system which can render a patient immunocompromised. Surgical procedures including transplants (which won't happen for all, but only a select few cancers) can involve immunosuppressive techniques and then leave the patient more susceptible to parasitic infection.
