Blair reports:-

"Ten per cent of NHS resources today are used to treat diabetes," he said. "By 2010 the estimate is that this could double.

"That's 20 per cent of the entire resources of the NHS - and it's avoidable. Three quarters of diabetics are Type 2 diabetics, and two thirds of them have a disease which could be preventable with exercise, diet and more healthy choices."

"As obesity increases we are seeing more and more young people, some as young as seven, being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, previously only seen in those over 40," she said.

"It won't be long before we start seeing our children growing up losing limbs and becoming blind as they develop the serious complications of having the condition."

I also heard it said that 1 in 5 young people already suffer with it. I suspect that TSR is slightly un-representative as students tend to be from richer-than-average backgrounds and slightly better educated but student poverty and laziness may mitigate against this . .anyhow it's defo a "student issue" and I wondered if anyone is involved ?
well my weights not an issue really and i normally eat properly, usually have a cooked meal most nights with veg, and i will be going to a gym soon as well. But yes there has been an increase of people being obese and its alarming, and many of todays children will die before their parents.

I know a couple of people with type 1 diabetes and a relative of mine had diabetes, however I don't know which type it was. I would guess that it was type 2 as he was diagnosed late in life. As type 2 is associated with obesity, if you were to lose wait would the diabetes be cured? I am not well educated in diabetes, just know the basic information from the couple of friends with the disease.

P.S I made a mistake on the poll, I should have voted for no and not I have symptons. (sorry)

What I have been told (so don't hold me on it lol) is taht the sympyoms include increased thirst and needong the toilet more often. Feeling tired a lot of the time and problems with eyesight. However, these are symptoms of lots of illnesses so even if you experience them it does not mean you have diabetes. My friend only found out when she was continually ill and being sick for a few days and was rushed into the hospital and went into a coma.

I have type 1, I was diagnosed at the age of 7 after a couple of weeks with symptoms like those in the post above. They thought I had mono and didn't figure it out until I kept blacking out!

I'm not British so the article doesn't really apply to me. I had no idea it had such an impact on the healthcare system. But I keep reading similar things about instances of diabetes increasing everywhere, and it's frightening! Children/teenagers should not have such unhealthy lifestyles that they're developing type 2. Dear God.

My Dad has recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, but he's 53 and not exactly slim, so I'm hoping if I stay healthy I should be ok. It's certainly not a cheap disease to treat though!
Considering how rare young onset type 2 diabetes is, i'd be amazed if anyone on this whole site could hold their hands up to it, given the average age here.

I know someone who developed type 1 diabetes after being stung by a scorpion...
