Underbite surgery

Hey guys!

This is my first post to TSR

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on underbite surgery.

About 7 years ago, my dentist referred me to an NHS orthodontist to put my braces on and took over my dental check ups.

In 2010, they told me my braces were ready to come off, but if I wanted to have the surgery done on my underbite, I would be required to keep them on and be put on the waiting list, as I had to be 18 for the surgery to be done.

I asked them to take my braces off, and once I turned 18 I would decide, because the feeling of having my braces off gave me much more confidence!

I'm now 21, and my old dental practice has since closed. I've finally decided that I would like to go ahead with this surgery, and maybe discuss it a little more. I now work in retail, and part of my job is dealing with the public, and I have started to feel more self conscious about my jaw line. I don't even go out on nights out with my friends from work because of how embarrassed I am about my appearance. I'm also having issues eating some foods, and when I sleep I wake up and my tongue is numb because my top teeth are digging in to it.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this surgery, and what happened, how was the recovery, how they went about getting put on the list again?

I had a consultation with a surgeon whilst getting my braces off, and he said that they would be looking to move my top jaw forward and bottom jaw back.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Hii! I haven’t had surgery yet but I do know what will happen! My dentist said that when I stop growing I can have surgery at the age of 16 or 17. (Im 15 now). You will be put to sleep during the surgery and you may wake up with pains in your mouth and a blocked nose. And you won’t be able to move your mouth a lot so u cant speak. This will improve after a few days. Depending how bad your underbite is you’ll stay in hospital for (3-5 days). You’ll be on a liquid diet for 2-3 weeks so there is a chance that you’ll lose weight approximately (-5kg) so I would start eating a lot before surgery. The best thing is you’ll miss 2-3 weeks of school/college/university. After surgery you won’t be able to eat any hard, chewy or sugary food like sweets, bread, coke etc. It’ll have to be something like mash potatoes and salmon for eg. I hope I helped anyone out! And feel free to ask any questions!
