I just got an offer from Durham for the computer science course when I applied for maths; can someone tell me why Durham would think this is a good idea or why someone would accept a place on a course they didn't apply for? I could understand Cambridge or Oxford doing it since some people would want to go just because it's Cambridge or Oxford but I don't think that's the case with Durham.

Many universities do it (and the courses draw on similar abilities and interests), but I'd be very surprised to hear of Oxford or Cambridge doing it. You can probably count the number of such offers made by them on the fingers of one foot.

I'd also be surprised to hear of Oxbridge doing it; I was just saying with Oxbridge people may accept the offer because of the prestige of the university I don't see why people would do that with Durham so it's pointless them making offers for the wrong course.

Clearly some people do accept the offer. Durham do have a range of very strong departments, and someone interested in Maths may well consider a Computer Science degree depending on their other offers, What's the problem? You're free to reject the offer.
As already mentioned the majority of universities, or certainly many, do this.

Yes I know; tbh I was just a bit disappointed I didn't get an offer in maths. I didn't actually mean my criticism of Durham it's obviously a very good university.

They offer you the option rather than just rejecting you outright. People are often prepared to consider a course that's a little different to the one they applied for, especially if they really like the university generally. Also, some people apply for courses that they are a little under-qualified for or unsuited to and if by March haven't received any offers for their chosen subject, may be very happy to be offered something else.

I am currently in Durham studying computer science, and I know it wasn't your initial choice - but honestly it is really great (and very very mathematical, hence why they offered it to you). Although, it is well known in Durham to switch courses in the first year/term (as long as grades are sufficient)
Exactly the same has happened to a friend of mine - he was rejected by Durham for Maths last month - and he's just received a letter saying they were going to make him an offer for Computer Science instead, based on his personal statement mentioning logic! He's just wondering if they didn't have enough applicants for Computer Science?
Same thing happened to me, I just emailed them about it. I'd be happy to accept Comp Sci though, as I was thinking about applying for it anyway, and I'd be happier at Durham than Warwick or my other Maths choices. Glad to know I'm not the only one.
Oh well, you weren't good enough, take the offer of Comp Sci or move on...
There must be a lot of good applicants for Durham maths this year - I got an offer ( not this year and I ended up elsewhere ) and my rejected friend is a better mathematician than I am. But move on is what he'll probably do, he has an offer from Oxford and is only looking for a backup. Oh well, Durham wasn't good enough, give an offer of Maths or don't bother ... ;P , seriously though I'm sure Computing Science is a great course and he may well consider it.
