The Student Room Group

Omg! please help!

Hello, I'm a 17-yr-old guy who is a smoker

I am starting my first year at university. The university requires me to do medical checkups such as urine and blood, etc.

Please explain to me what this means... will i get caught about being a smoker?

Please refrain from any flames and telling me what I shouldnt have taken up smoking in the first place

Thanks a lot

does your uni have a no smoking policy?

to be honest, i think they would be able to tell you are a smoker anyway (not to be offensive at all)..

Yeah, univeristy isn't highschool.
Err... it's normally fairly obvious you're talking to a smoker when they breathe in your face and it smells like a road. If they don't pick up that you smoke, I would seriously doubt the integrity of their medical department. On the other hand, if they reject you on the grounds that you smoke, or they tell your parents... well, nah, they just won't. :p: It's probably just to make sure you're not going to die on them in the middle of your course. Maybe it's a particularly 'interactive' course and they don't want to find out you're allergic to something or other when you're convulsing from overexposure to it, or maybe it's just standard tests so the uni has medical proof they did nothing wrong if something does happen to you. I wouldn't worry.

You shouldn't worry about it. Smoking is not illegal so its not a big deal. Personally if you were smoking weed or doing any other drug then theres a reason to be worried!
if they check your oxygen uptake efficiency in your blood or something, using the things they attach to your fingertips, they'll be able to see if youre likely to be a smoker, coz you wont have a high oygen uptake efficiency. a doctor told me when i went to a medical open day, he said "if youre a smoker we'll be able to tell, so beware" or something like that

if you don't want your parents to find out, then stop..

gosh, you sound awfulyl immature for a 17 year old...
"omg my parents will kill me because i smoke, eventhough i am 17 and old enough to know what i am doing. i should screw their views - it's my life."

And why would the university snitch to your parents? Don't forget some people your age are living on their own.

but do the medical checkups reach the parents at all?

This is university, not primary school. Smoking is legal and you are an adult. Hence, your question is dumb.

...your in UNI now, the staff don't give a monkeys about your parents.

Seriously mate, pull yourself together.

well, if you're 18 then I think you're an adult  so no your parents won't get told. Why does the uni need a med test? Are you planning to donate blood/sperm as part of your fees?

"How does AAB and your semen and blood grab you?" I'd find out why they want it before they go sticking needles in you. But hey, your life.

Either way, they won't give a **** about your parents.
They will ask you if you smoke for their medical records perhaps. Actually I don't think they even care if you lie at that point, it doesn't make much difference to them - are these medical check ups as part of joining the uni health services yeah?

There are tests which can show that you are a smoker, I believe it goes by the nicotine in the bloodstream, or something like that.
Smoking is a very common thing, not illegal, and your university can't do anything about it. The only thing they can do is give you a slap on the wrist if you're caught smoking in a non-smoking area of campus.
