Liverpool Hope University

Hey everyone,

I have a conditional offer to study at Liverpool Hope for Childhood & Youth & Education. I'm pretty sure it is going to be my firm choice but I was just wondering about other people's opinion on the uni. I have read mixed reviews on the uni and just wanted other people's opinions on it - pre-students and current students.

I also want some information about the course if there is anyone that is currently studying it.

What is the night life like in Liverpool? I often go to Liverpool on the weekend to shop and I really like the city as a whole. What is the student's union like and what are the tutors like?

Also about the accommodation, I'm not sure about which accommodation to apply for. I really like the new ones but because there is only 5 people on each floor, are these people on your course or are they random? Are you likely to make more friends in the old halls due to them being bigger?

What is the reputation of the uni like? Are you likely to get a job after you graduate or would it be useful to go to a higher university?

Sorry about the essay but thank you .

Hey! I'm doing the exact same courses as you. I've also made it my firm choice ^_^ Personally, I've heard that it's a good University. Hence, why I've put it as my firm choice.

I also want to know more information about the questions you've asked. So hopefully, by me posting this, we'll possibly get more answers

See you in September, maybe

Awww nice to meet you . I think it will be my firm choice because when I went on the open days, I could see myself studying there. So, what accommodation are you applying for?

Nice to meet you too! :') yeah, same here. It just seems really nice overall. And I like how it's not too big as well, if you know what I mean, I prefer smaller places. And I don't know yet :frown: the cheapest most probably because i'm poor :frown: ahaha what about you? ^_^

Yeah I like the fact that everything is on campus so you don't have to walk miles to get to a lecturer. I'm not sure about the accommodation yet but I'm thinking about the newer halls because I like the thought on having an en-suite but they are the expensive ones so I'm not sure yet

5 people in each flat, 3 flats on each floor (unless you're on the bottom floor, then it's two flats, resident tutor & common room).

People are just random, but in ours we had 2 x psych, 2 x QTS & one crim/psych combined so it worked quite well! If you're going to make friends, you'll make them wherever you go. The older flats are bound to be easier to socialise because you're all along the same corridor and sharing facilities.. I wouldn't have swapped my en-suite for a million more friends though haha. And there's always the common room, you can visit people in other blocks.. heck, some people barely spend time in their own flat anyway! And the majority of people I know made friends with people on their course rather than who they lived with, after the first few weeks anyway.

Reputation of the uni.. hmm.. I won't lie to you, it's not great. I won't pretend I understand exactly how much that influences people deciding whether to hire someone. I imagine it's less than what the majority of TSR would have you think, but that's not to say there's not an effect somewhere. However, I liked Hope, on the whole. Small, friendly uni, you're a name rather than a number.. but if you've been to an open day don't be fooled - people DON'T walk round greeting each other like all the reps and staff make the effort to on those days, ha, try that like I did and you get some very peculiar looks! Any issues I had with the place were to do with my course, and that's not what you're applying for (plus it was five years ago) so it doesn't matter and it wouldn't be fair of me to comment.

Only replying to this now because you repped me on another Hope thread so I assumed you were an applicant so I came nosing, lol.

Right ok thank you, so is it easy to make friends then? Whats the situation like when cooking meals? I'm just worried about how Hope isn't on any of the league tables and I know I shouldn't be put of what people say but it does get me thinking.

Well put it this way, I'm the most socially awkward person ever, and I made plenty of friends. I always found cooking was fine, as our lectures finished at different times so we'd cook and eat whenever we wanted, and would usually meet in the evening to do whatever. I imagine it would get quite cramped if everyone wanted to use the kitchen at the same time, but I think it's better than the older flats, which have no cooking facilities bar a microwave (because they're catered, so you eat in the dining rooms). I couldn't think of anything worse than having to go out for meals every night, I loved being able to do my own thing as and when I wanted.

The league tables can be worrying to look at, but you have to think about what you're going to Hope for. The education department at hope, for example, is very well thought of - it was a teacher training college before it become a university and is one of the top institutions in the north west for that. So for your specific course it shouldn't matter as much about the league tables in general.

I had an offer from the uni of Liverpool when I applied, which was obviously much higher up the league tables, but I chose not to take it because I just loved the community feel of Hope.. and I'm glad I made that decision because I got some of the best friends ever. Some of whom have gone on to do Masters courses at more prestigious unis - so the league table position shouldn't hold you back from going on to further your studies if you should want to.

One thing I would recommend is trying to get some form of work experience, as that's more important when you're applying for jobs these days, and it's not something that Hope tend to offer as an integral part of their courses. It's never too early. Even this summer would be great to make a start!

Sure, feel free . I think I'm one of the only active people from Hope (well, ex-Hope anyway) on here so might as well make myself useful! Plus you have to get as much info as possible before making your final decision, it's the sensible thing to do!

So not true!

The uni has a religious background but you can completely ignore that if you wish.

Hi, I have an offer to study Childhood & Youth and psychology. I really liked the look of the uni on the applicant days but like you I'm also wary because I've heard mixed reviews about the uni itself!
Personally, I think if I put it as my firm choice (which is highly likely) I'll chose to stay in one of the shared bathroom accommodations but only because I believe that'll be easier for me to socialise!
What are you thinking of doing now?

Awww nice . Yeah I think it will be my firm choice, I just got a nice feel from it at the open days. I'm thinking of the en-suite accommodation just because I preferred them to the shared accommodation. So I think this week coming I will put this as my firm choice

Don't worry, I'm worried about making friends again. I'm sure we will be fine but its like the first few months will be very strange but once you have settled in, I'm sure we will be fine

I've applied for Primary Teaching with Special Educational Needs and am really struggling with picking where to go. My major worry about Hope is reputation but that doesn't ALWAYS matter I suppose.

Can anyone say what the students Union is like?

Based from the applicant day I went to, the SU itself is very modern and new. I spoke to a few students who currently study there and they said that it is pretty good to go before a night out, when there is events going on and to meet up with friends, from what I remember the only down that was said is that it shuts around 11ish, although I may of misheard haha. I hope this has helped
