Why is using a jury more important in criminal cases?

compared to civil cases?
Because you can often be dealing with a persons freedom and liberty and therefor a jury increases the likelihood of the defendant getting a fair trial with ordinary members of society deciding if and how a person should punished.

Civil cases are usually to do with private disputes. There isn't an 'all or nothing' scenario as in criminal cases where you are either guilty or acquitted. That's why in criminal cases a jury is necessary to ensure that looking at all the evidence the prosecution have proved the defendants guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

In civil cases there is far more give or take. More than often a both parties will reach an agreement that is in someway mutually beneficial. A lot of the time this is done in out of court settlements. Essentially, the stakes are lower in civil proceedings.
