Emergency contraceptive/morning after pill

Ok due to a bloody durex condom splitting I had to go and get myself the emergency contraceptive. To my horror found that it was £25, how can that be an accpetable price for one tiny pill? Of course I bought it because that is way cheaper than the price of a child but come on £25 for something that wasn't even my fault.

Durex should do compensation, and its the first and i hope only time this has happened.

They're not advertised as being 100% reliable so you should really use another form of contraception too.

But £25?!!
As you said, better than the cost of a baby.

If you just used the oral contraceptive pill (or something along the same lines) as well...

You can get it free on prescription from your doctor, or from a family planning clinic

Most of the time when condoms split it's down to some fault of the user.

Plus as Juno said, you can get Levonelle free, so I wouldn't whinge about the price tbh.

If you're having sex then you must realise that no contraception is 100% and accidents do happen so I don't know why a) you're so shocked and b) so outraged.

You can claim it free on the NHS, and that was from boots...

The thing is if it was available dirt cheap potentially people may start using it too freely. Lets be honest, knowing that its £25...will you not be super-extra careful...at least in the short term.
You should prob think about the pill btw...at least they are free and prevent pregnancy even further!!!

Well no, because most people know that levonelle is free.

Not really, because the way that the M.A. pill works is actually not too good for your body, and it can create extreme nausea and pain in some cases. On top of that, it's not really that effective.

Didn't mean to scare you!

Compare these figures for the M.A. pill to those of the normal contraceptive pill*:

Taken within 24hrs ~ 95%
Taken between 24-48hrs ~ 85%
Taken between 48-72hrs ~ 58%

*Perfect use ~ 99.9%
Typical use ~ 95%

Vomiting within 3 hours after taking the tablet can compromise the effectiveness of the emergency pill. In such a case a further tablet should be taken immediately.

After using the emergency pill it is advisable to use mechanical contraceptives (e.g. condom or cervical cap) until your next period. After your next period you can start using hormonal contraception again.

The £25 is very reasonable as the drugs company has had to pay hundreds of highly trained medical professionals in labs for the last 20 years in order to develop that "pill". So they have to charge a lot in order to recoup their huge overheads.

(my dad works for the government on drug charges, so I know a lot )
if you take the morning after pill withing an hour of sex then i think its about as effective as any other contraceptive. the problem is that the longer you leave before taking it the less effective it gets.

Yes, but how many people can get to the pill within an hour after sex? Unless you live next door to a 24hr pharmacy, I can imagine that many people would find this impossible! Especially since sex often occurs in the silly hours of the night/morning when everything is shut.

I was thankfully luck enough to take it within an hour of the accident so hopefully I'll be ok (fingers crossed)

If you tell the pharmacist in Boots that you can't afford to pay and you can't get to your own doctor / family planning clinic in time, I'm sure I read somewhere that Boots give it to you for free  I'm not 100% on this though, just something I think I vaguely remember....
