Me  Hoping to (eventually) go into World Bank/IMF/UN/DfID/WTO type thing. Or just work for a foreign government. But more development finance and public policy than strictly development economics.
i hope to study at SOAS for Bsc Development economics. career aspirations would be to work for UN, diplomat service or something to do with government or an NGO. i find issues surrounding developing nations more interesting than that which concern the UK.

yes, this is my opinion, too. i start my study this year in Germany. i hope to get in LSE or another uni in GB to do a master degree in development economics or something relating to.

LSE doesn't offer a masters in development economics. The only places I've noticed it being offered anywhere in the world that's really highly ranked is Yale (MA International and Dev Econ) and Oxford (MSc Dev Econ). However I was recommended that if you want to do dev econ properly, don't do a masters in it. Do a masters in straight econ and take modules in dev econ, as the quality of the degrees is much better.

I'm thinking about doing something in Economics after my degree (EEM), but not sure where or what yet, Development Economics is one of the areas that really interests me though.
everyone is banging on about oxbridge, i would say it is WAY better to go to SOAS and study in a place with leaders in the field of development economics. yet that is my opinion.

If the leaders in development economics were at SOAS, I'd agree too. But they're not. They're at Harvard, Yale, MIT, Columbia, Cambridge and LSE. Which of the SOAS faculty do you consider a leader in development economics?
Reply 9
True, but if you want to go into development economics, that MSc won't be particularly useful, as it's severely lacking in economics. However if you are already an economist looking to retrain into development, it could be useful.

Hey, I'm thinking about accepting my offer for Development studies and economics at the University of Manchester (BAEcon) but I'm not sure if it's as highly regarded as just economics, any thoughts on that? I would like to work for the UN/World Bank for example so would this then be a good degree and do I need a Masters degree to be able to work in these organisations?
Any replies would be greately appreciated:smile:

This is pretty much the area i want to go in, since i greatly enjoy Macro. I think it would prob be best to do Eco then to start specializing, yeah i think you probably need Msc or Phd

I like development economics and would love to work for some sort of NGO/ world bank/ IMF or maybe even for a government. What I don't know is what sort of qualifications you need. I will be doing by undergrad course at Warwick (grades permitting), but would I have to get a masters or Phd to get such a post (also is Warwick reputable enough).

I know I'm looking too far ahead as I haven't even started an undergrad course yet
