Why am i so self conscious?

Ive just started volunteering on a Liverpool hospital a couple of weeks ago and I think that they think im strange or something. Everyone minds there own buisness they don't seem to care but I don't want to appear rude by just walking around anywhere and doing what I think it would be a bit too forward. On the other hand I don't want to just stand there like a dummy, I asked these 2 nurses who were talking if they know where the manager was (I wanted to ask if there was anything specific I could do) and they pointed 'over there' but as I walked away I saw them look at me and smirk at one another and carry on there conversation, then they were watching me. I felt like a right idiot is there anyway to improve your social skills? I talk really quietly and inconfident:redface:

Sounds like most the people there are rude, especially if they can't be bothered to show you where the manager is! That said, you could be imagining that they're smirking, but then again you might not be - some people are just like that and talk about others.

Basically, my advice would be to just be yourself, who cares what others think?! If everyone minds their own business and doesn't seem to care, they probably won't notice what you do. If you feel like talking to a patient who's been stuck in a hospital for weeks, having a little chat might just make their day - don't let the idea that you think others will think you're strange stop you from being yourself!

By the way, I think volunteering in a hospital is a really great thing to do - be proud of it, maybe even think of it as a learning curve
Yeah i agree with what Gem says here, it seems it's not your fault, its the fact those nurses there are so rude.

Maybe your right, they probably wouldn't notice whatever I did lol, it just seems like they are the ones in charge and im an invader, I feel like a spare part with everyone watching but not talking but as you said talking to patients is probably best. I wasn't imagining things, maybe they were just smirking and thinking 'aww bless' or something lol or they might have found me amusing.

I didn't mean you were imagining it in a bad way - I imagine people are talking about me sometimes, I think we all do occasionally to be honest! But if you weren't imagining it, then it's their problem, not yours  They obviously don't have the manners to introduce themselves properley, tell them a bit about their jobs, what goes on in the wards and then show you where the manager lived. They're the ones who are at fault, not you.

You just keep doing such a good thing, I'm sure the patients will appreciate a regular friendly face and chat
