Changed my Name - Will Student Finance accept my Birth Certificate and Deed Poll?

I am applying for Student Finance, and last year I changed my name via deed poll due to personal reasons.
I phoned up Student Finance but they didn't know, so I thought I'd ask here.
I do not own a passport and cannot afford one.
Will Student Finance accept my birth certificate and my deed poll?
Will I need to send a cover letter as well, or anything else along with it?

If this is your first time applying for student finance then just use your new name. I was never asked for my birth certificate and I also changed my surname before applying to uni. A change of name deed was sufficient for changing my name at school, GPs etc. so I assume student finance won't as for anything else.

All students using a birth certificate have to send it in with the birth certificate form, downloadable from Gov.uk, countersigned by someone of standing in your community.
