The Student Room Group

Obviously not lol - I doubt many people have actually tried to appeal, I mean they don't give you halls you really don't want on purpose and I think probably the best they could do now - is put you on the end of a waiting list and hope that someone (I know it sounds harsh for that someone) doesn't get the grades - but you don't know how long that list will be?

They can't just let you have a room and then tell someone else to get lost...you haven't got a room in one or all of your choices probably because there isn't room anymore from when they got your application.

Although I do know that Manchester have a silly policy of allocating city centre halls to international students before british students because...'they are new to the city and it will be easier for them to find their way around'....as if UK students wont be new to the city....

Why don't you see if your the first to successuly appeal? Quicker you do it the quicker you will find out what you can do.

Hoping someone wont get the grades wont do anything, they don't allocate halls til you have met your offer.

What hall did you get by the way? None of your 3? If not how come? When did you send your form?

I expect it is possible to appeal at this stage as most people wont have been allocated halls yet as A level results aren't out for a while yet.

they only give out offers once they are confirmed you definately coming to man to study.
normally by this time they should have given out all the places to IB students or any other students that have already have the result and confirmed an unconditional firm.
other students taking A levels whom get their results on the 17th has to wait.
also note some halls do have limited amount of places therefore they might move you to your 2nd or 3rd choice.

I suggest everyone appeal against any decisions they don't like. I appealed to get a place at man initially, this was because my personal statement allegedly didn't state why I wanted to study medicine. Funny cuz nottingham, and others were fine with it. It just goes to show that if you don't ask, you don't get! Admin always screws up.

The reason why I got Mobery Hall, was because I put down the word 'mature' on my application They misunderstand what I meant, they assumed that I wanted to be with older students.

Heres the problem, the dam hall doesn't have fridge or a cooker... how weird is that.
OK cooker fair enough, there's a refractory downstairs. Refractory food is rubbish for vegetarians & people with halal diets. But come on, no fridge. I like my corn-flakes in the morning or some coffe/tea. Where the hell would I put my milk?

That really pisses me off! Buying my milk every morning.

The refectory has a reasonable amount of veggie stuff. But maybe you could say you only drink soya milk or something like that...maybe then they'd at least allow a mini fridge in your room?

Yeah say you are lactose intolerant or something - doubt they can disallow it then. I think I may have got confused because when I applied in 2004 I was offered halls with a conditional and had to pay a depost and they were university owned...which made me think they allocated rooms and then there were free rooms when results came out and they knew who was definately going to be staying there.

Great news people, I won my appeal!

I informed the accommodation office that Moberly Hall is unsuitable. Because I have very particular dietary habits it is essential that I prepared my own food, that is affordable and appropriate to my taste. The meals offered at the refractory are not of sufficient variety for student with vegetarian or halal diets, or students on a budget. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could reconsider my application

Its funny am I kinda sad in away, I liked the idea being so close to lectures...

If your read the accommodation prospectus book or look at the website it clearly states that there is no fridge or freezer.
E.g. Kitchen contains a microwave and a kettle and is suitable for the preparing of snacks.

Since I like to do my research before hand, I phoned the administration office (0161 273 2926) and the accommodation office (0161 275 2888) to confirm. Sadly fellow, its true no fridge/freezer.

I know the university literature is rubbish. For example the maps, who ever designed the maps must have been taking the piss! For a university to produce such a pathetic map its ridiculous.:p:

I'm sorry, but they are wrong. I have lived in Moberly Hall for the past five years! They probably mean there are no kitchens with 5 fridges in each one like most halls. But there definitely is a fridge in each kitchen on each floor. It is a bit small, but there is a fridge.

I was a floor tutor for four years and I had to keep ripping into the floor members about the state of the fridge, so unless I have been living in some world of my own for the past five years, there is definitely a fridge.

It's best to not call the administration office, as in general they have no idea what they are talking about. The only thing they have correct is that there is no freezer. But I've always bought fresh food - so not much of a problem.

I should also probably mention that the accommodation booklet is the weak link here.

Most admin in the admin office have never seen a hall, let alone know what they are talking about in this specific, specialised, case.

Also allied with this is the fact that this is the time of year when the accommodation office is very busy so they hire a lot of temporary staff. These are the people that answer the phones and do face-to-face work with students a lot of the time. Thus they don't know the specifics and probably just took a look at the booklet for the (incorrect) information, as it was the best source available to them (to their knowledge).

For nine years now, admin in the university have sometimes been frustrating and there is always the odd piece of information that is incorrect. However, this past year has been the first year of the merger, which led to whole new systems being introduced across the board (with I am told - by a member of the staff - no staff training). All of this leads to confusion all around; the best thing is to speak to the students who have been there a long time.
