I will however say that Ronaldinho was the most amazing to watch.

Agree. That overhead kick he scored, was about 2006/7? No way did he mean to control it the way he did, he messed up, but the improvisation was jaw dropping. It absolutely summed him up.

You never knew what he was going to do next. Whereas Messi is predictable, not in a bad sense, you just know what to expect with him and are powerless to stop it.

It's why messi is such an amazing player. You alms it always know what he's going to do but you can never do anything about it. Unless your Sergio Ramos and you just take him out haha

But Ronaldinho was just something else. His improvisation, his skill, his willingness to try anything in a game is just phenomenal.. Which is why i choose him over messi

Messi easily.
Disagree with the OP. Messi is 26; he's hardly reached his prime, let alone passed it. There's no indication that he's declining or stagnating either, if anything, his numbers (as well as his actual performances week in week out) suggest that he's still improving. So to be fair to Messi, the comparison should be made once Messi is 33, which is in 7 years.

Anyway, simple answer: Messi is the better player, by far.

Qua, I think I might fancy you a wee bit aha ! Your posts are always a great read :')

Statistically, you can argue that Messi is by far the better player in comparison to Ronaldinho so yeah, I agree with a lot of what you wrote. From my opinion though, I'd rather watch Ronaldinho in his prime any day in comparison to Messi (although, like you said, he has not reached his prime yet and so the comparison is slightly invalid) but then again that's me, and that's you. Better player is such a vague term that is subjective to each person. Messi is definitely an all-rounded, consistent player but for me, Ronaldinho is better on the sheer basis of great football.
At the end of the day football is about winning and scoring not aesthetics however you can make an argument that you enjoy watching Ronaldinho more.

Hmmm.. Debateable that. It's true though I can't really say he's past his prime but we all know how messi was when he was 23-25, he was absolutely beasting it left right and centre and was doing it so perfectly that poor old ronaldo had no chance to get the world player of the year right? I compares those years to ronaldinho's 03/04-06-07 seasons and that's where I made my comparison. Yeah in terms of goals messi kills ronaldinho but I still found ronaldinho so much more enjoyable to watch. Having said that though, if ronaldinho didn't exist, messi would have been my number 1 choice
Messi fanboys make me cringe.

What;s interesting to note is that their devotion to Lionel is such that they can't even bring themselves to admire others like C.Ronaldo for the absolutely one in a lifetime players that they are. Every compliment is backhanded or has to be phrased in such a way to imply that Lionel is superior.

Surprised nobody has come out with ''But Messi is such a nice guy and Ronaldo is such an *******!!!!!!!!!'' yet :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Obviously I'm bias as well, but I think Thierry Henry was a better all round striker than Messi as well. Henry had more to his game at his peak.
Whenever we talk about Zidane, Fat Ronaldo, Scholes, Ronaldinho and Henry, we must always consider the effect of overrating due to nostalgia.

The truth is, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have transformed football. They are on a different level to any other player in the last 20 years (I can't comment on Eusebio, Muller, Pele, Maradona etc because I wasn't born).

I think we're going to have to wait a long time to see two players scoring over a goal a game in a top league for 5+ years straight again.

Yes, I know what you meant. I'm just saying that Messi's peak is probably yet to come. Last year, he was out for 4-5 months altogether because of his harmstring injury that didn't really heal, so people got the impression that he wasn't as good as before, while, in reality, he was as good as ever in those games he played. His long absence and breaks inbetween were a bit misleading I think. Now, this February has been the best/most prolific of his career so far. So there is no indication yet that Messi has already peaked or has entered his prime or passed it; if we go by his age (and numbers), his prime is probably yet to come.

But anyway, I know what you and other people mean when saying Ronaldinho was more enjoyable to watch, and I agree. But as I said, I think this has to do with Ronaldinho having been given complete freedom on the pitch by Rijkaard. He was never really forced to adapt his play to a certain system because of Rijkaard's laissez faire attitude. Messi, as a teen under Rijkaard, was similarly entertaining imo; but at 20 he was asked to adapt (and thus of course develop) his play and fit into a certain role (first supporting right winger, than false 9) in Guardiola's system, which is why he has had less freedom to express himself. Before Messi got famous (let's say 2006-8), he had just as much flair imo.

Similarly, you can't really compliment Messi without somebody bringing up Cristiano and asking why he doesn't get praise. Or argue that Zlatan should win a BdO without having people jump at you for that blasphemy of neglecting the other two.

I don't even know why Cristiano was brought up now, he has nothing to do with the subject. He's not even comparable to Messi or Ronaldinho since he's inherently a different type of player. He doesn't have as much natural talent but makes up for it with his perfected technique, his athletic qualities & physique, superior work rate and determination. In that sense, Cristiano is perhaps more of a role model; I obviously prefer Messi as a player but I admire Cristiano more for what he has achieved.

Messi by a mile. How is this even up for debate?

Really? Feb of this year has been his most prolific of his career? You have to remember his career at the top pretty much started when he was 19. Can you prove that statistically? Lol I'm genuinely asking because it that is true then messi is truly an exceptional player.

Problem with ronaldinho was his discipline. He wasn't so serious about his game, he even said he wanted to initially be a dancer and not a footballer (and I think we can tell that from his skills). Similar to the problem Tyson had which is why it's hard to compare him to Muhammad Ali (I know it's off topic but it's similar)

Messi has always been on point with everything he does, and you can tell he will keep trying. Messi's current image is slightly blurred in Europe too, especially after the 7-0 bayern thrashing but he had literally just come back from injury then right?

Even though you can pick out stunning goals that messi has scored, I'm sure you can pick out much more jaw dropping goals that ronaldinho has scored.. Hence the excitement to watch him over messi. Some of mess is dribbles are crazy though, it looks like he does it for fun. But with ronaldinho, he'll do skills that some players don't even attempt in training

It's true. I was watching a documentary on c.ronaldo and how he's achieved what he has is truly astonishing. The guy used to strap 5 kg weights to his ankle and used to do footy training. Madness.

2008: 3 goals 3 assists in 6 games
2009: 2 goals 2 assists in 6 games
2010: 2 goals 2 assists in 5 games
2011: 5 goals 2 assists in 5 games
2012: 7 goals 3 assists in 7 games
2013: 5 goals 1 assist in 6 games
2014: 8 goals 3 assists in 7 games

In the years before that he had 2 and 0 goals respectively.

Funnily enough, I still found him rather poor in most games, by his standards that is.
People who try and act as if there are only Messi fanboys

And Henry better than Messi as a striker?

No contest. Messi gels better with the team but as an individual Ronaldinho at peak was on another level..

Ronaldo "fanboys" (I hate that word) make me cringe because they say things like this.

While a lot of people don't like Ronaldo, nobody above the age of 12 would seriously suggest that he isn't a player to be admired.

Ronaldo is the epitome of hard work, but Messi is the more gifted footballer.
