the law for teachers in this case..

I guess this is really more suited to the general secondary school forum but I'd really rather post anonymously!

Does anyone know what the law is where teacher/ex-student(aged 18+) relationships are concerned? I've heard that the student must have left school for at least three years before anything is allowed to happen. I'm not quite sure how the law should be allowed to control that morally, it sounds quite strange to me, so if anyone knows....

P.S. sorry for ANOTHER one of these types of threads! :p: I've tried to keep it as un-mushy and un-high school as possible!

I've always understood it to be that as long as there is no teacher/student relationship and the student is over 18 then they are free to do whatever they like.
Yeah...i hope thats right anyway!

Awwww, that's just really sweet! Actually one of the oldest teachers at my school who is very well respected, his wife (who is also a teacher there) was his ex-pupil, they were married in like the 60s. So cute, I love stories like that!

My school had a freaky rule : All teachers should be above the age of 40
Reason :
1) They are more experienced
2) So no affairs would be between the students n teachers

I was sooooooo bored in my school but came out with good grades !

Sadly this doesn't stop a relationship forming in all cases :frown:

A friend of mine's parents met whilst she was a sixth form student and was on a PGL-type outdoor pursuits course. He was one of the instructors!
she has left school so theres no problem
My dads best mate is a teacher, and he married an ex-pupil of his, although they didn't start going out until after she'd left school. (They met again about 2 years after she'd left, and hit it off then.) As far as I'm aware, there's nothing to stop teachers dating ex pupils, as long as it starts once the pupil has left school. My dads friend is very very straight laced, and a bit of a prude, so I can't really imagine him starting a relationship like this if it was against the law.

A teacher at my school letched over one of his pupils for about three years, then went after her once she left school. They dated for a while, but then he got bitch-slapped by school for misconduct. He was in his mid-30's, she was 17. Tut tut Mr.A, no promotion to head of department for you...

If it's 18+ do you mean Uni? Just one of my lecturers married an ex student and they have two little girls now  I'm not sure if they dated when she was a student though, it might be different for Uni?
There was a teacher at our old school who got off with a girl at a sixth form christmas dinner and he didnt even get fired, but also there was a teacher just recently who got fired cos apparently he was touching up girls. They were both in their 40's, eww! Glad I'm not at the school anymore, what a right load of pervs!

I always thought that it's illegal (as in can be put in prison) for a teacher to have a sexual relationship with a student under the age of 18. So if they are 16 or 17, under normal circumstances the relationship would be perfectly legal but since they are in a position of trust, it's illegal. But I assume that once they hit 18, they are legally an adult so any relationship is legal (but they might still be able to get fired for it).

Haha, ex-Hautlieu?

wow, another Jersey person, cool! yup, that's right- ex hautlieu!
In my school a teacher (male) had sex with a boy in the toilets and people found out.

The teacher was convicted for child molestation and hung himself before he was convicted. His name was Gregory Graham of Wimbledon College
