I think you need to be more specific about what you mean by a smartphone. You can buy smartphones for under £50, and you can buy smartphones for over £500. The answer will very depending on what price bracket we're discussing.
As above it depends on the value of the phone.
Additionally it depends on what value you assign to each of it's uses. For a high powered chief exec, being able to receive and respond to emails on the go is an extremely useful and valuable tool and could almost entirely justify the cost of the phone. However for me this function is a luxury and although it is convenient i don't need it and would assign little value to it.
Another examle is the GPS. My friend does a lot of driving so the built in sat nav function is very useful and worth a lot more to him than me who uses it once in a while.
