Approaching mathematical problems

Just out of interest, how do you lot approach problems in maths before answering them? I've heard that some people try to answer it in their heads and then write it down, whilst others go straight in and write everything they think down...Personally, I find it quite difficult to visualise it in my mind, which I something I tend to do and find quite effective for chemistry/physics

If it's obvious how to do it, then I just do it. Otherwise I simplify it in some way, whether it be by eliminating a variable, drawing a picture etc. nowadays virtually every problem I do falls into the former category unfortunately.
