cant stop clicking/cracking joints!

hey all, b4 i delve into my prob im just testing the anon feature bcause ive never done it before

anyway yeah as the title says i cant stop clicking just about every joint in my body! back, neck, hands, toes - everything! getting to the point where its causing a dull aching pain when i wake up which gets better throughout the day.

ive read on sites etc that new research suggests it doesnt cause athiritis which is what EVERY1 tells you just to shut you up and stop the clicking. however it is having an effect. e.g. whenever i go bowling now i cant hold and throw the bowl without experiencing ALOT of pain in my knuckles, which have also expanded so that if you run your fingers down the two sides of say your index finger, theres a bulge around the knuckle.

its bcom an addiction and need to stop. has any1 any tried and tested ways of stopping. ive tried just stopping but i cant go longer than a day. i even do it without thinking which is worrying. e.g. when ive taken a break from what i was doing, click CRACK click click is what i hear b4 i think AAAAH STOOP.

any helpful suggestions would be great.

I have the same problem with my ankles, to the extent that they give up on me and i stumble alot because the support is gone and my ankles turn to jelly. I also find if i try and stop them from cracking, my ankle feels like its getting stiffer and stiffer, and gets increasingly more painful, as soon as i let them crack the pain is eased and they feel normal.

Yet no1 seems to have a solution for me, ive spent several months under the hospital and been sent to a department to carry out exericises in a controlled enviroment. I have since been discharged and still have the same problem. I beleive my problem is down to my circulation or as you said athiritis.

I'd go to see a doctor about it. Non-excessive cracking of joints is harmless, but if it is done on a regular basis, it can lead to problems, I believe.
I got the same thing in my left elbow everytime i do pushups the damn thing clicks or if i lift weights with that arm, it gets irritating after a while

I have this in my ankle because of a bleed which I didn't let heal... and it's ****ed things up a lot. I'm on a course of physiotherapy but I really don't think it'll ever heal...

I do recommend "GLUCOSAMINE" though. They've been proven to help joints and stuff, and will certainly do you no harm. It helped both my uncle and mum who had knee injuries similar to the ankle one I had.

Yeh in the future you may have problems, so go and see a doc x

it seems most of you who have posted have the occasional click or have something medically related.

im talking about deliberately cracking so that as glory pointed out, the stiffness goes and you get temporary relief.

hmm pandy pointed out GLUCOSAMINE as a remedy? what does that do exactly?

I'm exactly the same! I've never met anyone who clicks their ankles too! Does it hurt when you drive? Really hurts mine :frown:

To the OP though, is it a habit? I mean are you clicking without realising that you're acutually doing it, and it's only when people pull you up that you realise?

no my ankles are fine driving, its more stairs i have issues with. As soon as my weight is put onto one ankle the problems start. The amount of times ive fell over in a shop going up stairs and got surround by shop assistants is past a joke.

When i went to the hospital the physio's gave me these toeless socks which were lyrca socks, to provide extra support. They made it worse, because all the natural support i had become unused and wasted away. Then i had insoles which were supose to put my feet into the correct position, i have fallen/low arches. They didnt work apart from making my feet hurt. Then the exericises were basically resistance training using a large elastic band.

I guess im not as bad as i used to, but i doubt anything they did helped me. I just try and keep them warm, uncrossed and avoid having them elevated, and the cracking is reduced but still existant. Also cold weather so pretty much any month which isnt june, july or august, is prone to causing me problems.

i love to click all the joints that i possibly can in my body... its very satisfying!!! although i dont do it as often as you! however, i did used to play bowling at least once a week which left me with a problem in my right hand, middle finger knuckle and i had to have a short course of physio... and to be honest it didnt realy make any diff! i still click that joint every so often, however, ive tried to cut down. when i first stopped clicking that knuckle i had great pain in it, but after a while, the pain goes and my joint got a lot better!

Now you've met another, mine'll just randomly click as I walk sometimes as well as me doing it deliberately. Mine never hurt though. It's my wrists that I'm worried about being able to crack the most as I'm on the computer for 16+ hours a day. In fact the only joint that hurts to crack is my right knee, and that hurts when moving the full range anyway:confused:

Does anyone else crack their toes?

i click my neck and knuckes and the little joint in the middle of ur finger, or is that the knuckel.... i cant even spell the word. anyway on my finger the bit at the hand where u finger begins and the bit halfway with the wrinkles.
anyhoo if i dont click them and then say i push myself off a chair they click anyway, so i might as well do them myself, and i remmeber once, i clicked my neck and i had like a shooting pain in the middle of my head, that was weird!

That is exactly the same as me but its my back not my ankles. Everyone is always like, just stop clicking it but i can't. It gets all painful and stiff and i need to crack it to make it feel ok again. Its so frustrating, how can i stop it?

I have this in my toes (sounds weird i know). Mainly first thing in the morning when i walk around I click, i find it funny more than anything.

I do this too...I have shallow joints so if i dont click my joints then i can end up dislocating them, because of not cracking my little finger, it is now contorted (due to being dislocated and then setting). I heard though that it doesnt cause arthritis and it is an old wives tale but dont really know if thats true...^^

argh i click my fingers and i HATE it but i can't help it either! every time i do it though, i imagine myself being some old granny who can't use her hands, so it makes me guilty and stops me from doing it again.
There is no way out, once you pop you can’t stop
