I run about 4 miles or half an hour every night. However, the pain in my calfs is limiting my stride and stopping me from doing more. Whats goin on? They just feel really heavy and tight. When i was training for rowing i had no such problems.

Have you got proper running shoes? If so, how many miles have you run in them?

As in spikes? No way. I just use me trainers, which are well worn in. I'm only running round a pretty even sports field.

Get proper running shoes. Go to a specialist running shop and get shoes that fit your stride pattern. Tell them what sort of running you usually do (road/cross country) and how far etc. They'll get you to run on a treadmill and give you an evalutation of what shoe would fit you best (for free). Running is an impact sport and without the proper footwear you risk long term damage to your joints

Also, are you warming up and stretching before and after running?

Seriously.. combine Iyengar Yoga into your weekly training plan. If you do it enough you shouldn't have to suffer to with sore muscles at all.

I don't *do* running though. Surely there's another way?

I normally wind down in a lap. Sideways skippin and high knees and stuff. Bascially, my old circuit trainign warm down, so i dont think thats an issue.

You're not stretching your calves out properly either pre or post running. It doesn't matter if you're doing it 'for fun' or to train. If you want to avoid injury you need to warm up and down properly.
