I dont know to be honest, but i googled and found this http://www.animated-teeth.com/root_canal/t4_root_canal_pain.htm

My mum. Said it was very sore first couple of days, now tis ok.
I've had 3 done, and trust me- it doesn't hurt at all. Yeah the injection in your gum with sting a little when it peirces the skin but it's not agony. The actual drilling bit doesn't hurt due to the injection and the part when they get the root out just feels as though they are being a bit rough on your tooth- but you hardly feel a thing. I thought it would hurt, but it doesn't at all. It only takes 5 minutes to do as well. No worries.

you will feel what they are doing but you will not feel the pain. imagine someone pinching you - you can feel their fingers on your skin but you wont actually feel the pain. crap analogy...

but the injection hurts sometimes. sometimes it's just felt like a pin prick and it's not a problem, other times it's felt like someone was dragging a blade across my gums. i'd say the injection was the worst part, after that it's fine.

also, when you've finished take some painkillers. and dont try to eat afterwards. when i had a root canal once i kept biting my gum where the tooth had been worked on and of course, because i was numb i didn't feel the pain. as soon as it wore away, i was in agony for about 3 days.
I had it done after an ordinary filling resulted in a nerve trapped inside it! They really don't hurt, although they take a while, I had to go back on several different appointments, but my emergency one was all in one go, but trust me, it's really nothing, especially compared with the pain I was in just before I had it done!

Had it done twice.

No problems, no pain at all from the actual drilling. The only pain was sore mouth muscles from having my mouth open for so long!

Heard its meant to be exceedingly painful, but i really have to get it done, i dont want a gap in my teeth! and i cant just ignore it, its good and infected and is pulsing away here, urghh

please someone tell me theyve had it and it wasnt too bad at all...

Yes Ive had one! It doesnt hurt at all, its more uncomfortable really and takes forever- mine took like 1.5 hours to do! They put like a plastic sheath over your mouth to stop anything getting into the tooth when they're doing it so it feels a little weird, and I had this metal frame holding my mouth open.

Trust me, its better than living with the pain, as I was in agony before I had it done!!!

Ive not had any problems since but when I go on aeroplanes I get a little pain in the tooth for a few days after, I suppose its because of the pressure.
Yeah, the main pain is lockjaw and achy muscles, it generally feels pretty much the same as a normal filling, just takes longer

Thanks guys for reassuring me! seems like its one of those urban myths that its a total killer...

Oh my god! The aeroplane thing is what set off my teeth this time!

Raindropped, i had a wisdom tooth out last tuesday and thought itd be awful but it was really ok! Dentist i have numbs gum with gel before spiking you with the injection so even that wasnt traumatic. Tooth came out in like a minute, healed up easily too

Adverse Reaction, i totally know what you mean about the agony you have beforehand prolly making the treatment pale in comparison, im really suffering here lol. Plus- squeamish peeps look away now- there is actually gunge in it, a bit oozing out every now and again, which not surprisingly gives me the most revolting taste...yuck:s: cant find the puking smilie...
i had one done. it didn't hurt.

if it does ask them to stop and give you a little more painkillers
i had one done. t'was ok.

My mum had a root canal done and she said that it wasn't too bad - she was very glad that the root canel got rid of the pain she'd had before it was done - because of this, she felt the injections she usually hates were very worthwhile!
Had it once and nothing was painful, not even the injection!

The only thing it it can be uncomfortable because you can't swallow while they're drilling.
I used to be a dental nurse and have watched many being done! Most people get a little scared at the injection, and don't like the drilling because of the noise but it's not a complicated procedure. Dentistry is very advanced nowadays and causes minimum pain. You won't have a gap, as they will probably use tooth coloured fillings which you can hardly see.

Heh, couldn't have been a very good nurse then. I used to get a great satisfaction from hoovering up the saliva.

I have had fillings before and I'm sure root canals are just like them. Ovi the needle will hurt a tiny bit but when I had my fillings the rest of the operation wenter smoothly. If u do feel ur in pain just raise ur hand and ur dentist will give u more shots. When the shots wear off, u might feel uncomfortable but it usually goes away in a few days.. good luck

Yes its painful. The injection for the anesthesia. If ur dentist is skilled in rootcanal then its not gonna be a problem. But if not hes going to mess up ur tooth
