Depressed Student: Need time off school

I don't want to go too into it on here, but basically I think I'm depressed. I think the term is probably overused a lot, but I'm genuinely feeling as though I could be. For personal reasons and family reasons, I'm not in a good place... and the workload of school is really not helping. I'm so behind, I can't empathise how behind I am - I really can't. I was thinking about going to talk to my GP. I've been told that they'd rule me off school for a bit and give me some time to catch up. Do you think they would do that? I am in desperate need of it, honestly.

Going to see a GP (or your school's counsellor) is definitely a good idea, but I wouldn't bet on them giving you time off school. Whilst it might sound like a good short term solution, missing school will cause a lot more harm than good. Unless you're in KS3, you really can't afford to miss an extended period of school because your grades will suffer. Additionally, whilst school might feel like a massive burden, at least it's something to occupy you. If you've got no school and you have nothing to do all day, that'll just make the depression worse.

Definitely talk to someone about this. The worst thing to do would be to suffer in silence, and do bad in your grades as a result of that. Go to your GP and find a tutor or someone understanding at the school to see what support can be offered to you.

Thanks for your replies

I had an appointment with my GP today. She immediately signed me off school for up to 2 weeks. I'm in Year 11, and my GCSEs are fast approaching. It may not sound like a good idea, but honestly, there is no hope in hell that I would've finished all my coursework with just the evenings and weekends available. Through being given time off, I'll get all the coursework done. I think this will take the pressure off a bit. We've finished all class topics, so lessons are really just revising now. I'll be able to revise at home for two weeks. It's not a huge amount of time, and even if it does put me behind... I am sure I'll be in a much better situation than I am now (many units behind in a handful of subjects).

I'm going to get everything on track. I'm feeling a bit more confident thankfully. I'll finish the coursework, revise for the exams and hopefully things will turn out OK.

My friend missed almost 2 months of school for what seems like similar reasons and had just as much to catch up on when she got back :/ what you should do is go to see your GP or school counsellor (school may be best for faster results, they can refer you to specialists) and they can either get you started on medication, if you want that, or get you someone to talk to weekly or fortnightly to help relieve the stress.

Trust me, it is doable, it's just finding things to make it easier.

Good Luck, hope you feel better soon xx
