Thinking of doing automotive engineering [advice needed]

I've just started thinking about courses that I want to do at university and I'm particularly interested in Automotive engineering. The problem is I feel like that I do not match up to the standards required for this degree - I've never made anything in my life and degrees like this sometimes rely on past experiences. I am really needing some advice on what to do because I'd like to take on this degree. What background do I need? What will help my personal statement when applying through UCAS? At the moment I doing AS Physics, AS Biology, AS Chemistry and A2 Mathematics and I will be carrying on with Physics, Biology and Chemistry next year.
