The Student Room Group

It's a mixture of events - social nights at the union and more practical stuff like tours of the campus and the library and talks from various people. It's organised by people at the university. None of it is compulsory. I didn't go to anything apart from Freshers' Fair, where they give out freebies (pretty crap ones).

Was it that bad or you just didn't feel like going to any of it?

I lived at home and was working full-time right up until the day before my course officially started. I'm also not very into drinking and clubbing, so didn't feel like going to the union events.

I should probably have mentioned that stuff like tours, talks, etc. is part of the University-run orientation programme and is free. For the social stuff, you'll need to buy a Fresher's pass (or at least that's how it was four years ago, I think it was about £30). They sent me a leaflet about it just before I started.

Would you reccomend going if you are not Glaswegian? From what you say it's info during the daytime and party time later on, so if you aren't a party animal you can skip the evenings. 30 quid is rather expensive I think - what did that get you?

the £30 pass gets you free entry into all events organised by the university and the unions in Freshers week- although I'm not sure if that applies to big music gigs etc, but certainly for most things. You don't need it though, I never bought one and got on fine. Most people I know didn't have one either and were fine too.

I'd definitely go along to Freshers week as a non Weegie. It is a chance to meet people and get involved in the numerous societies and events that are all across campus and beyond. You don't need to be into drinking and clubbing to do stuff at night- there's plenty of theatres, cinemas, and other groups such as poetry, art, and singing clubs that meet up in the evenings. The university is your oyster! If you have any queries about what's on in Fresher's week when you're there, phone nightline and they'll help out. They'll also listen to you if you need to speak to someone about feeling a bit homesick, lonely, depresseed etc. Incidentally they're also looking for volunteers if anyone is interested....Good luck, and have a great time! Scruffs

Of course you can have a good time without alcohol - but I can have a good time with it too, so I'll be smashed for the duration of Fresher's week!

Freshers wekk is amazing! In my opinion, every fresher should go. I'm at Strathclyde and I had such a fun week at freshers week and thats where I met a few people who have become my best friends now (awwww lol!)

It doesn't have to cost much, although the unions will have bands playing (I know strathclyde have the Fratellis this year) and other entertainment, you don't have to go to the specific events. There was some things I didn't want to go to so just sat in one of the other bars and had a drink or palyed pool. Then again, I'm only refering to Strathclyde union because It's got something like 6 different bars!

Yay, I can hardly wait to meet all the new people. I'm not a heavy drinker but I'm always ready to have some fun and I think moving away from home is a good enough reason for celebrating a bit.

 I can't wait too. Departs are sad but I'm starting my own life finally, yay!

They still haven't confirmed my unconditional though. It's a matter of days, but I'm nervous..
So yeah, after that whole stress I quite need a party in Glasgow
