The ski trip of a prep school near my house cost £2,000, so for people from people of that background, £500 really is a snip.

Maybe it was more..I don't know or care as that kind of money is something me and the majority of students can't afford for a week skiing.

There are a few reasons why it's so 'cheap' - the main one is the time of year they go. I guess at school you either went at Easter or Half-term. These are the most expensive weeks to go and will cost roughly twice what it does at other times. The varsity trip goes in, I think, the 2nd week of December which isn't even low season, its out of season. When they got there this year there was literally no snow. Fortunately it snowed on the 1st or 2nd night but they could easily have had a skiing holiday with no snow. Also everyone on the trip is an adult - there's no costs associated with having 1 supervisor for every 10 kids or whatever it is. Thirdly there's the scale of it - they book out an entire resort, out of season, I'm surprised it doesn't cost less. I've been skiing twice in my life, both in January. First time cost me £350, 2nd a smidgin over £400 2 grand seems ridiculus to me....

I went on Varsity last year and was appalled by the really really bad organisation. I was in the 2nd Skiing team (decided by time trial which i only knew about cos i happened to get on the right lift at the right time) and was not informed of any of the night time activities before hand.

College trips however are the best opportunity to go skiing, if your college has one. The Pembroke one next year will be max £400 (I HOPE!)for a weeks skiing, all meals and travel. A far better bargin than the varsity trip, and we know how to organise a piss up!
