Before marriage

What are Hindu customs regarding sex before marriage? Sorry, I would've put that as the title but I don't want my parents typing something into like google and that question coming up as part of the history and stuff. So yeah, does anyone know what is generally accepted? I know a few Hindus, girls and boys, who aren't virgins anymore but I wouldn't say they're very religous and they do hide it from their parents. It seems older generations 'condemn' it but is that a social attitude or one based on religion? I'm very curious and am struggling to find definitive answers.
