I would like to ask if this is the correct equivalent between undergrad and postgrad-MSc:

1st - Distinction
2:1 - Merit
2:2 - Pass
3rd/below - fail

What are their equivalencies to the US scale of 0-4?

I am asking to help me in my applications. If indeed a GPA of 3.07 is 2:2 but I got admitted into an MSc anyway to graduate with a Merit, will my performance in an postgrad-MSc supersede my undergrad performance when I apply? I notice even in my unis back home they require me to produce undergraduate transcripts for PhD applications.

There's no direct equivalence with undergrad grading, as you're working at a higher level with a Masters. Plus some UK universities don't offer Merits and just give a Pass or a Distinction.

If you're thinking about a PhD then your undergraduate performance/result can be a factor. Generally in the UK I'd say it's less important for getting a PhD place as long as you have a good Masters result and the relevant units of your undergrad degree were good. However PhD funding is very competitive and with an OK undergrad result and a pretty good Masters, the likelihood of winning funding is slim.

Having just gone through athe whole PhD application process I can safely say they your undergraduate grade will matter and top universities are not going to consider you without a distinction in your masters and at least a 2:1 in your first degree.

Masters degrees are marked less uniformly to undergraduate level so it's hard to say to be honest.

On my MA it was possible to get a pass or a merit I think but I don't remember distinction existing (or it may have been the other way round where a distinction existed but a merit didn't, I forget). Point being though it's hard to compare masters degree "grades" in the same way as first degree classifications.

To emphasise the value of your masters for further study, I would mention things like what area of the subject you specialised in and how you can bring value to further study.
