Criminology Degree!! ADVICE WANTED PLS!!

Hi, im new on this site and have read alot of posts on different subjects but there isnt much on criminology! would you say its more vocational or non vocational and is there high employment attached to this degree. I know it depends on which uni you go to but on every website forum there is never lot of information or options for this subject. Would you say its a weak social science or quite respected. It does seem really interesting but i dont want it to lead me to just policing or any crime related job! Any information would be really helpful even if harsh........ok not too harsh!
Sorry for the long post BTW ! LOL
Thanks

Hi:smile: In in general terms, I would say a lot depends on where you do it, what the degree is like and as you say - what you want to do it afterwards. I may be a bit biased having done a masters in criminology and using it a lot for my PhD but I would say its interesting.

Employability wise - hmm. My personal view that its quite a 'trendy' thing to do at the moment - i.e. lots of places are doing it and its quite a popular choice. Having looked at what friends have done or are heading towards, it is mainly Criminal Justice type stuff. I think you will find varied views as to the status of the subject as a science - it is still a fairly young subject, and the positive side of it being more fashionable is that a lot of thought and development is going on.

Non-vocational, low employment in unrelated areas, a weak social science. Thought along the same lines as media studies and sociology (fairly or not)

However I imagine it would be very interesting to study and if you want to go into the police then go for it!

Employment prospects are pretty limited with a criminology degree. It seems to scare off most traditional employers. On the other hand, you will certainly get a job with the police. The other option is to do a PhD and then try to get a teaching job in a university.

If all else fails, there is always Tesco.

JH probably stands for joint honours where the work you do at university is split between two subjects.

So why would you want to do criminology if you do not intend to work in any crime related field ?

no need for flippin name calllin! at the end of the day supposedly its a non vocational subject therefore it doesnt prepare you for a specific career even though it would be easier to get into such crime related careers. The modules sounded really interesting and its quite related to psychology and politics from what ive read which i enjoyed doing at A level. i dont even need to explain myself
.................waiting for another unecessary rude answer.....so predictable.

I'll be studying Criminology & Sociology at Manchester Met this sept, although i'm planning on joining the police force afterwards, so its a perfect fit for me. It depends on what you want to do after uni. I dont understand why your thinking of doing it, yet dont want to go into any related career afterwards? If your not sure what you want to do when you leave I suppose its best to choose what interests you most.

I don't understand, you want to do criminology but you don't want to do anything crime related. Seems pretty pointless, maybe think about what you want to do before you jump into a degree you might not want to do.

Hey nice one, man met rules! I'm staying at Briarfields. I stayed with a couple of friends for a weekend who study at man met and manchester uni. The city was cool and the nightlife was amazing. Everythings on the main street and its in a really student orientated area, didnt see any chav's or anything!
My advice is that if you want to do criminology then do it, better to be on a course you like than a course you dont (unless you like eng lit that is). I've been told that criminology has alot of transferable skills and you wouldnt need to go into a crime related career, apparently alot of students go on to local and national government aswell. I plan on joining the police, although i'm not 100% sure, I may feel different after uni. My advice is to do what you want to do, it really isnt fun doing a course you dont like.
Where you staying anyway?

aaw! thanks that makes me feel a whole lot better. ill hopefully be stayi at wilmslow park , hopfully it should be fun u heard anythin about it? yea im jus waitin for the admissions tutor to tell me if i can change course or not the thing is hes back from hols on the 14th but they wouldve gotten the results already so fingers crossed. plus i really want to got to man met so if he changes me to crim i kno i can get in but i doubt it for english as i think ill miss it by like 20 points Lol. x

I dont know anything bout wilmslow, but i'm sure its good. I stayed at a friends flat from manchester uni and visited another friend who stays in mill point at mmu. It was really nice and I think its the cheapest of mmu accom so the others must be pretty good too. Are both your courses at mmu? you might still be able to get in even if ur 20 off if you beg them:p:
