Failed One Compulsory Module

I'm in due to enter my second year at Brookes. I have passed all seven out of eight modules with B+'s and a few C's and what-not so that's fine. However, the module that I've failed, with a mark of 39, which sayed the same after a resit, it's 40 to pass, is a compulsory module. I do not have any warning messages on my info page, except for an automated warning message, which I know all Universities operate. I cannot understand why I've underperformed so much, although I now know that I'll be able to avoid modules of this nature in future.
What usually happens in this situation? It would seem pointless for me to be forced to retake the year simply over one silly mark. I really did get 39, I'm not exagerating to pake my position sound less rediculous than it already is!

Has this ever happened to anyone, or does anyone know of this happening before? What was the outcome? Is one able to merely add the module onto the year 2 programme timetable?

slightly anxious!

Also, we're only required to pass 6 modules, althouh te compulsories still ave to be passed. So, effectively, Ive met the requirements, but also flouted them!

I thought that at universities you can still progress to the next year of study if you have an overall score of 40% for the year and no less than 35% in any one module, including compulsory modules?

Would've thought they'd use their discretion, but it would seem wise to call someone who would hold this information - your tutor?
Mine allows a pass at 39% even though strictly speaking the pass mark is 40%. They call it a condoned fail.

Ring your tutor and ask.

Contact them - many will issue a condoned pass, as suggested by Tarts n Vicars. However, some universities and departments might ask you to resit the year - this happened to a friend of mine :frown:

Yup - failed one compulsary unit and had to repeat the year (IIRC he didn't have to retake any paper he scored over 50% on...) The main problem was for one of the compulsary 3rd year modules, you needed a pass in the 2nd year module he failed, and the 3rd year module ran before the second year one did, so he couldn't sit an extra part 2 module in year 3...

You received no indication that your final mark was going to be under 40? No marks or feedback on coursework?

Would suggest you need to speak to:

a) Course leader to get feedback on where things went wrong on the course;
b) prersonal tutor about procedures open to you

Good luck!

Yeah, but you're talking about failing a module in the second year. First year work doesn't contribute to your final grade. Obviously if your friend failed a module in the second year then it's no wonder he'd have to repeat, otherwise he isnt going to receive a substantial part of his grade. The work Im talking about doesnt even count towards my final degree mark.

I - all people who failed retakes for first year exams had to resit the year. That happened to a fair few people in my faculty.

But as I said earlier - it is all uni and dept dependent, and the only person who can answer your specific query is someone in your dept...
