I'm trying to write an essay about Honecker ruling the GDR, but I'm not really sure how to explain that part of his success can be said to have come from living in a niche society.

Can anyone give me any pointers/ examples? Many thanks!

What part of the explanation are you finding difficult..?

What does 'niche society' mean? How would it allow him to be successful?

Niche society suggests that East Germans came to terms with life in the GDR by outwardly conforming and only grumbling in private homes, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Stalinallee Riots in June 1953 and other smaller acts of protest demonstrate this!
