Self-teaching GCSE chemistry

Hello,

I am a mature student who will be taking an access to medicine and bio-medicine course from September 2014.

The last time I studied science was at GCSE in 1999 so I wanted to refresh my knowledge. Can you recommend any GCSE textbooks to use for self-teaching? I basically need something for absolute beginners.

Thanks in advance
I don't know of any good GCSE textbooks but try giving these links a go:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/ - you'll have to select an exam board/specification and then scroll down to chemistry sections

http://www.s-cool.co.uk/gcse/chemistry
http://www.revisionworld.com/gcse-revision/chemistry
http://www.tes.co.uk/home.aspx - this you'll have to sign up for but it's where teachers share their resources, e.g. powerpoints, worksheets, homework, etc.

If you'd rather have a textbook try looking for Collins textbooks, I use one for my A-level chemistry and it's brilliant, however the 3rd edition is really expensive (~£40 so I borrow it from the library instead). This is the textbook I use: http://www.collins.co.uk/product/9780007267477/Collins+Advanced+Science+-+Chemistry+%5BThird+edition%5D
I've just ordered the second edition for less than a fiver but it stopped being published 10 years ago so I've no idea how relevant it is to most specifications nowadays...
