Anyone got any information and case studies to use in the exam?
    2004 Asian Tsunami - LEDC
    Japan tsunami - MEDC
    Mt merapi - LEDC
    Mt Eyjafjallajokul - MEDC
Japan EQ (that caused tsunami) - MEDC
    Haiti EQ - LEDC

Thats all i can think of so far, need contrasting case studies of how some disasters were managed

    • Hey guys,

You know for those of you who are doing tectonic hazards...since the pre release this year focuses on section 4:Responses to Tectonic Hazards.....do we just use our research from here or do we have to use our research from section 1: Tectonic activity hazards, etc...?

Some feed back as soon as possible please...we haven't started this unit 4 prep in school yet so on the verge of panicking!

Also do we just learn the case studies and strategies?

Hi guys, what are we thinking as possible questions? The only issue I'm facing at the moment is there seems to be a hell of a lot of information to be researching - before, during and after strategies used for multiple types of hazards? I'm worried Edexcel are either going to be ridiculously strict or give a really vague and wide ranging question?

the usual really. like japan 2011, boxing day 2004, all the sort of major events. gone for ones that i have a memory of. like chile 2010 as well, haiti. for volcanoes bit more tricky, but well eyjafjallajokull is a good one, so long as you can spell it!! hope this helps - look for ones that have affected LEDCs and MEDCs. i'm still trying to look for a good LEDC for volcanoes.

do you know how to write reports? i am struggling with them!

Great, thanks! Although old, I think Nevado del Ruiz eruption in 1985 is a good LEDC volcano case study!

And I am okay with writing reports - the only really tricky part I find is trying to decide on what subheadings to use, and also trying to find an appropriate point to put in diagrams as well - what diagrams are you thinking of using for this question? I was thinking a Park Model but not sure what else?

how would anyone structure a report on this? do you think there would be a question on how effective strategies are and why the effectiveness varies?

How you structure the report really strongly depends on what question we get asked in the exam, surely?

That could be a possible question - but that would be quite nasty, as to know the effectiveness of the strategies, you would need to know the human impact of each event - which isn't hinted at in the steer.

My teacher has given a list of potential questions. Some are a lot easier than others - but they include:

To what extent do management strategies of tectonic hazard vary with the type of hazard?
Examine the role of technology in managing hazards.
Assess the view that it is more important to manage primary tectonic hazards than secondary tectonic hazards.
To what extent does the risk of secondary hazards influences the type of strategies used to manage tectonic events.
