sit ups. where is it supposed to hurt afterwards (if it is at all)

Right, well I've started to do some sit ups each day. being I've only just started, I'm only doing 25 for now, as I'm rubbish at it at the moment. I've just done my 25 for the day, and my ‘tummy’ area is hurting a little. it's sort of underneath my belly button area. is this normal? or does this mean I'm doing it wrong? are there any main areas where it's supposed to hurt afterwards? I'm thinking I'm prob doing them wrong right now, so any help would be great

thanks
seems normal because thats the area that will be under strain, also your shoulders and top of your back will hurt as well especially if do say 50 sit ups, depends how fit you are though

Aching in the general abdomen area is normal.

Are you doing it like this?

Don't put your hands behind your head though like in that pic, put them by the side of your head, near your ears or temples.

thanks all
Having hands behind your head strains your neck and can injur it if you yank yourself up so dont do that also try getting someone to hold your feet if you struggle.

Shoulders and back will hurt too? What on earth are you on about? Not unless you are doing them amazingly stupidly.
rofl sounds like a backwards situp, somehow. I doubt you're going to have pain in your shoulders and back, and I'm not exactly fit.
It could be a pulled muscle...

It shouldnt, it really shouldnt, i do 3 sets of 25 crunches with a 20kg weight on my chest in 1 session and my back and shoulders never hurt. You must have bad form.
Crunches are better than sit-ups for working the abdomen because sit-ups use the hip flexors for a lot of the movement. Either way, the amount of muscle soreness is not a reliable indicator of how effective the exercise has been.

well i have had a history of back problems or injuries, so it could explain it i don't know
if you get a body pod (or ball, but the pod is better), and do crunches on them, its more effective (according to the fitness instructors at my gym) and works the muscles in your back too.

Then why include it in the context of her question?

You're obviously doing them wrongly and shouldn't be, especially if you have a history of back problems.
