Impetigo

Two months ago I developed a very nasty, painful case of impetigo around my mouth. I've been to the doctor, and he gave me an ointment for it which initially worked. However, this week it's started to flare up again, the second such recurrence. I've been trying to pin down what might be triggering it, and the only thing I can come up with is an area in my workplace.

It's literally just a passageway between two buildings, is dark, damp and very very dusty, with a stone floor. The buildings themselves are over a century old. There have been dozens of alcohol spillages in there that haven't been cleaned up properly and there are suspicions of a rat infestation. However, it's used for storing stock for which I'm responsible so whenever that stock is needed, I'm in and out of there for ours at a time. Going by what I've described is there any possibility that these surroundings could be causing the impetigo to flare up (dust mites for example)? If not, can anyone suggest other possible triggers?

I apologise for posting anonymously as I know this feature is often abused. However, in order to be accurate I had to mention the rat infestation, which could be construed as libellous if people know who I am and, ergo, which workplace I am referring to.

Thanks in advance

Michael

Impetigo is caused (in most cases) by a bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus - it is very infectious, and if it is not 100% irradicated can recur.

I would go back and see your GP as it may be another course of antibacterial ointment is needed, or if severe oral antibiotics...

Thank you. I'm on my second repeat prescription of ointment and it seems to be clearing up, however, I'll bear this in mind. Would anything I mentioned about my environment be acting as an accelerant to recurrence do you think?
