I have to question whether everyone who has posted on this thread has actually HAD traintracks. I agree with you when you say to not make the decision because of what other people might think, but at the end of the day, they can knock your confidence a bit (mine did).

Unless having gaps means that the teeth could move back more easily?
Ask if they'll be giving you a retainer. They probably will. As long as you wear these every night, your teeth should stay where they are. I've been told to wear mine for the rest of my life, but I would be told this whether I "completed" the treatment or not. As far as I was concerned, my treatment finished when they "made me not goofy any more", it was almost like they were trying to find things to "fix" I'm not suggesting they're doing this with you, but ask yourself: will you feel more confident with them off? And ask your ortho.: Will the early removal be physically detrimental to my jaw?

At the end of the day it's up to you, but a lot of people are giving the "keep 'em on" opinion for the "perfect teeth" reason. I consider my teeth perfected, and I didn't finish my treatment.

Yeah, having a brace really has knocked my confidence. I'm absolutely fine with it when I'm around all my mates and family, but I'm worried that when it comes to meeting all these new people I'll feel shy and self conscious because of it.

I have had braces since last feb, so over a year and a half, and have been told i will have them untill christmas. i am fine with them, and am actualy very glad that i dont have to have them tkaen out just before university, because i would rater start uni with train tracks then retainers since with the former at least you can still talk properly! and thats more important then how they look.

There's a girl I know who's starting her masters in October, she has braces and girl I would do her!!!!!

ive just finished first year with braces and will prob have them for a while in second year, no1 cares really no1 cares

i'll probably still have mine, and they don't bother me that much, but theyre inconvenient sometimes because it takes ages to clean them properly.

and when ive been drinking alcohol they seem to rub on my mouth a lot more, not sure why that is, but its annoying.

i can see why you'd want to get them off if your teeth are already straight

Ive got fixed braces top and bottom and a head brace to wear at a night time. Ive been told i can ditch the head brace but i'll probably have my fixed braces on for all or most of my first year. To be honest i feel more self concious with my buck teeth than i do with my braces.

If i were you i'd keep them on, you'll have to pay thousands in years to fix what you could have done for free. Whats another month?

Couldn't you have the appointments in the holidays? Surely it can't be that much hassle. My orthodontist was a half-hour train journey away and some of the time I had to go on a bus to get on a train to go one stop further. THAT is hassle. (Bearing in mind that these appointments were 5-10 minutes.)

i had braces and when they were taken off i had a whole world of extra confidence. having braces effected my confidence a lot and changed who i was really, as i tried not to smile and when i did i covered it.

if i was in your situation i'd get them off. i have a small gap at the back left by braces and i never ever notice it.

but it's up to you. i'm sure no one is going to care that you have braces, but i know hearing that didn't help me feel any more confident.

I've always worn my retainers at night  and I will always have to.

To be honest i feel more self concious with my buck teeth than i do with my braces.
The point is though: she's nearly finished the treatment. She won't have buck teeth any more. It's a case of the final month, to correct a tiny thing you can't even see. If she still had buck teeth, of course I would say "keep 'em in!"

as someone whos had them and just recently had them off, i would keep them on. i think you just need to realise that your braces don't MAKE you. if you're really self-conscious about them get transparent bits instead of colour.

you say that it won't make a difference but if you should have them off at the end of september i'm sure you're ortho would have said you SHOULD have. they know best and even if your teeth are straight it doesn't mean they have settled properly into their position (hence the retainer) so another month will have its benefits where the retainer-pain is concerned.

have you got your wisdom teeth yet? because the gaps might affect the growth of those.

i really think that finishing the treatment is the way to go. but only if youre confortable and confident with yourself so that your personality (not your braces) are prominent. having said that, if you're truly unhappy about it, perhaps getting them off is a good idea . i was always self-conscious about my braces but then one day someone id known for 9months suddenly says to me: whoa you have braces!!!. ok so they might have been slightly blind i don't know. but people don't notice them like you do.

Girl... seriously no one gives a S**T! I am sorry but your situation sounds really pathetic and immature. Only a few months and it's done, I 'll tell you now it's worth the wait after years of misery!

Well, I was pretty much in the same situation at college where I was virtually the last one to have braces in my year group; but no one ever comment on them though. Now that they are taken off and bleached, some of my friends at school are so jealous, they even start to wear braces at the age of 18!!

OK, you might not get the best impression from your new mates at Sept but just hold on to your secret weapon yet to come to get them godsmack!

I had my braces put on just before I started my uni course and have worn them for the past two years and no one - not even the sports lads we have lectures with has said anything about them. They have had absolutely no effect on my relationships with anyone and if someone did have a problem with them I would tell them to boil their head!

I start a physio degree in September and will be wearing my brace for at least the next year as I still have a tooth which needs to be brought into position.

Give yourself a break and stop judging yourself on petty things. If you are a nice friendly, approachable person no-one will give a stuff whether you wear braces. If you hide in corners to prevent people from seeing them, they will think you are weird.

And I am 20years old, so you aren't the oldest person in the world with braces!

Does having a retainer affect the way you speak??

Does having a retainer affect the way you speak??

It mainly depends on the type of retainer BUT if there are any speech problems caused i can guarantee that after a few days it will dissapear.

No one should really care at University age! Theyre just idiots if they do  But at the minute I have an invisible brace thing holding my four front teeth in place for a few months...coz i didnt wear my retainer muahaha
