I had a dilemma between UCL and Edinburgh, so I'll show you a bit how I decided.
Does it make any difference in tuition fees? Also life overall seems to be much cheaper in Edinburgh than in London. Although finance is important, I'd mainly focus on the structure of the courses: do you want to go into research? Then it's important to get as much experience in that as you can! Also, don't know if you know this, but apparently these 4 years honours courses at Edinburgh can also counts as a kind of masters, giving you the possibility to do a PhD straight away. But check this for your own course please to be sure hehe. One last thing: London can seem like this magical place that has everything, but once you're there you probably won't have the time and the money to do more than will be on offer in Edinburgh. Maybe a bit biased, but hope it helps!

For Chemistry there is an integrated Masters program but that is going to be one year longer. My Dad said he isn't going to pay for that so I'm trying to see how I am going to do the integrated masters or just graduate with a Bsc and leave to USA (hopefully) and manage to get a paid masters. ( or work and then do my masters) But both universities are good in research right? At the moment, don't really know what I want to do quite yet. They say a gap year is suppose to help you out with that sort of thing but honestly I think Im more confused now and not to mention - more lazy too. hahaha. I do think London is a nice place but I was thinking the same, do I have money or the time to do all the fun things?
What are you studying ?

Focus on your exams! Imagine how it must feel for me; moving from half way across the WORLD.hahaha

ofc that's my main focus, it was just a joke :colondollar:

in saying that, i've still not chosen any accommodation. i love the fact that the accommodation with ensuite is cheaper in edinburgh than the small single with shared bathroom in london

Yea I know, was just trying to make friendly conversation:biggrin: Oh I think the good think about Edinburgh is that it's not on "first come first serve " basis for the accommodation unlike other places. As long as you are firmed conditional you can apply for accommodation by A certain date and everyone has equal chance! Maybe the threads on accommodation can help. Good luck for your exams!

Yea London is just crazy.

Sorry, but that is just untrue. The MA is the equivalent of a BA and, given the competition for research funding you would still have to do a postgraduate masters before being accepted onto a PhD.

The only areas where this is untrue is in the sciences where it is possible, although probably not all that probable anymore, to go straight from a BSc into a PhD.

I'll be studying biological sciences hopefully . Still have to get through this coming week of final exams (Holland). If you don't really know yet what you want to do with chemistry, then I'd say go with the course that starts with the more broad first year. No idea about research at imperial. But I don't think the research reputation is very important, it's much more about how good the teaching is (for a bsc anyway).
I like the idea of USA! If you were to choose Edinburgh and you would spend money wisely, I should surely think you'll have more money at the end of the course to maybe (partly) pay this?
Yeah and I don't think a gap year is really what you need. Like you already know what you want to do, you're just not sure about where? The thing to do is write down all the pros and cons per uni, that will make deciding much easier I think.

I was just repeating what I was told on the open day :colondollar:..

I'm afraid they told you a lot of rubbish. What degree are you going onto?

I'm graduating this summer having done Ancient History! It's a great course and the lecturers are really good, especially when they get to talk about their own special subject areas.

Hello! May I ask what do you plan to do as an Ancient History graduate?

For now, nothing to do with ancient history haha  I'm open to looking at museum work or something similar later, but for now I'm more interested in travelling around a bit, and working another ski season :colondollar:
My friends who have done ancient history are doing a variety of other things - 2 of them are going on to do a masters in ancient history, here at Edinburgh. One is looking for a job in archaeology. The others are doing a similar thing to me, and looking for jobs in various fields, unrelated to ancient history.

Okay thanks! Do you believe there are jobs in archaeology nowadays?

Yes a fellow scientist ! Yea in Edinburgh it seems like it's more flexible. If i do choose Edinburgh I'll probably go for 2nd year entry. I talked to a student who is finishing her second year and she said the teaching is good. As for the money bit I'm not entirely sure. I am paying international fees so I doubt I'll have enough. It's too late on the gap year bit, it was a rash decision to take the gap year (which I am regretting) I'm not sure what I'd like to specialise in for chemistry. I have written the pros and cons. My dad has written his skewed version of pros and cons as he prefers Imperial more. Honestly if both unis are as good, I don't see why I need to be paying £15k more ! ( perhaps even more in imperial since it is in London)

In Holland, are you taking the British A levels or a Holland system sort of pre-university education?

I know that my friend has definitely seen jobs to apply for. Personally I have no idea as I haven't looked - I'm totally not looking for a history/classics/archaeology job right now, so I've done nothing to investigate the options. Sorry I can't help more!

A fellow scientist with some interest in biochemistry . Why second year entry? Yeah that played a strong role in my decision to choose Edinburgh as firm, it's soo much cheaper! Leaves a bit more cash for further studies ^^. Only thing I'm afraid for is that there won't be enough diversity in the nightlife.. The city centre is of a reasonable size, but found it quite hard to get good info on clubbing etc. Where are you from, considering you're paying international fees?

The Dutch system. I only decided to study abroad last year, maybe would have done IB if I would have known.before.

I asked for second year entry because the first year modules are mostly covered in my A levels from what I hear. (I already got my results last year, so I'm actually on a gap year) With second year entry, it means the duration of my course is the same as in England (and also a lot more cheaper) I'm from a small country known as Singapore, (a city-state) in Southeast Asia.

I'm not too sure of the nightlife. I know there are quite a few bars and they have some festivals ... If all else fails , you could go down to Glasgow ! Hahahah

Hi guys . My name is Bety and I am from the Czech Republic, planning on starting Economics and Politics (Anyone doing the same course?) at UoE in September. Im very excited for moving to Scotland!
My offer is firm conditional, I have already met the conditions so now Im just waiting for confirmation by the university after they process my uploaded documents. Does anyone know how long it can take?
Is anyone that's going to Edinburgh that does not live there commuting there? I live in Glasgow and thinking about Edinburgh uni but I feel it's a waste accomodation as it is cheaper just travelling but travelling seems to be a bit much to travel so I do not know what to do any thoughts?
I am going in September'14 to study fashion. Its so far away from where I live in the south east, kent and not knowing anyone is a bit daunting aha.... Good to find people in the same boat. Even though Im not studying maths or classics....brainy bunch :o:o
I am going to study Chemistry. Anyone else?
Going to study fashion.
