Of Mice and Men- Setting

What can I write about under the heading of "setting" when talking about Of Mice and Men?

I have written that it is set in Soledad which is in the southern states of America where the dust bowl was a major problem and where racism and intolerance was rife.

What do you think this brings to the story? Is it the correct setting for the characters? Does the author use the setting and scenery at all to get across major themes in the story? :holmes:
