My gums are starting to receed

Not really badly but enough to notice it around certain teeth like the big pointy ones (canine teeth?). At the bottom you can see where its whiter than the rest of the tooth. My dad said to just brush not so hard but it isnt as if i am brushing really hard now!

Is there any way to get them back again or to prevent it (other than brushing lighter)? If it gets really bad (in years to come say) what do i do then?

Didn't colgate just release a toothpaste just for this...? I saw the ad yesterday...
maybe the toothpaste you are using is too strong. I used to have a same problem.

I use colgate (the original one) and a kid's size toothbrush. this helps because I find the larger toothbrushes aint as good. try getting a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

my dentist said the listerine mouthwash is really good for protecting against this

You need to brush your teeth at a 45 degree angle in a circular motion around the whole tooth, also scrub the back of your tooth aswell, especially the lower jaw as that has the most build up for plaque.

As for gum's receeding there are two things you could do; you can just wait it out until they need extraction and have some dentures fitted or you could just have them extracted and fit in some dentures, don't worry they are painless and comfortable and if you have money you can buy new trendy dentures that are mostly metal and not plastic and fis around your gums in a much tighter grip rather than the suction mechanism reminiscent of the old dentures.

Or you could just try bleaching your teeth, demestos or whatever you minger...

I've had this problem for a while and have been to my dentists about it. She said to use a small kids toothbrush, and brush both the top and bottom teeth together, as oppose to scrubbing away at top alone. I'm not sure if that makes sense by hey.
Also i know its hard but dont overdo it on the brushing front.

dont, its crap, I tried it as my skin was high up on my canines, and all it did was make my teeth really sensitive and bleed every time I brushed them. Grosse.
