Alcohol through a straw - myth????

Due to machanical reasons I drink beer through a straw. Now can anyone tell me if the 'you get pissed faster' thing is true or a myth. l was beginning to think it was a myth then heard a convincing explanation about it hitting the roof of your mouth. Does anyone know the truth??

Myth. They tryed it on Brainiac and they said it was a myth. And I believe everything on Brainiac.

Unless you had a gaping bleeding wound at the top of your mouth, that drinking alcohol normally failed to get anywhere near, but magically through a straw it did, I doubt your guna get drunk any quicker...

The only possible way it's likely to get you pissed faster is because you can drink faster with a straw.

When I drink with a straw I always drink a lot in one go because I find it more fun than normal drinking, maybe that is why so many people think it makes them drunk quicker.

it does hit you faster cuz theres a big surface area so it goes into your blood stream quicker. ive never tested it cuz i always drink things with staws anyways but yeah.
but who cares if it hits you faster...?

I heard that it separates the alcohol chains into smaller groups so that they get into your bloodstream far more easily as your blood has to deal with a smaller volume of different length chains at once. Thus it moves into the blood quicker. Sounds fairly logical. I've never heard anything about it hitting the roof of your mouth and that getting you drunk faster though, sounds like a rather strange explanation of how to get drunk faster. :confused:

Also, found a random website, which stated:

as you sip through the straw air is mixed with the alcohol more effectively, and this carries the alcohol to the nasal cavity where it is then absorbed more rapidly into the blood stream.

It's if you put it in your eye. Works best with vodka. Think up your nose is an accepted method too...

To be fair, i think you answered your own question here really!
- Clearly, how you get the alcohol from you glass (or other containing opject) to your mouth makes little or no diffrent to that affect of said alcohol.
- I mean think about it, when you drink a pint (normal) a decent chunk of it winds up touching the roof of you mouth.
- Further to that, when drinking with a straw, most of the drink does not touch the roof of you mouth, certaintly not if you dont want it too.

Well, looks like you'll be getting drunker quicker than everyone else : )

Im sure drinking booze through a straw does make it enter your bloodstream quicker, the same with drinking alcoholic drinks which have bubbles in it!
now if you just drunk champagne or Vodka+lime&soda water through a straw all the time.... that'd be racking up all the points on the multipier.

here ya go, I found the vacum bit that I couldnt remember.

Drinking alcohol through a straw makes you drunk quicker - true, alcohol has a lower boiling point than water. In a vacuum even water "boils" at room temperature. By using a straw you create a vacuum in the mouth - the alcohol boils and vaporises within the vacuum and is thus quickly and easily absorbed through the well blood supplied membranes of the mouth and hence straight to the brain.

so definitly not a myth!

yeh, and if you drink it through a slim glass rather than a pint glass, you'll be on the floor in minutes too

The only reason that drinking alcohol through a straw gets you drunk quicker is because when drinking through a straw you often drink faster.

All this stuff about vacuums etc sounds like dodgy science to me. You can't absorb any kinds of gas or vapour through the lining of your mouth because there are too many layers of cells, hence why we need specialised organs (ie the lungs) to get oxygen into the blood stream.

Hmm I'm still not convinced. You can come up with all sorts of scientific explanations for it, which probably are true to some extent, but the real question is does it make a noticeable difference? I'd guess that any difference it makes is completely overshadowed by other factors.
