To LittleMissSmile, I have been to Newcastle and it is awesome. Top clubs and bars (don't know much else besides the football and clubs but.......). The point that the other guy was making was that these people can't hack it in the world outside their little sphere (I think).
ok well leekey ill let him off the once maybe, just love my city dude!
newcastle night life does rule! at least once these exams have finished i may b able to have a social life again!!!!!

NO, there should be a fuss made because I have seen some of the brightest people I have ever met get straight A's all thought their educational career and then get rejected by some f**king university. Who must have felt that they weren't good enough for there "establishment".
Just because you get straight A's it doesn't mean you deserve to go to these Universities! This is why there is an interview. They want to see an ability to think outside of the textbook.

But I have watched these people work harder than any person sitting in a private ( mummy and daddy paid for) school, that got accepted in place of them. Surely a university must realise that a person working their way from a lower class backgound must have more potential than a student with equivalent grades that went to a private school!!!!!

Yes, and they take account of this. People in private schools work just as hard as people from state schools. It seems to me like you have a bad Oxbridge experince.

Ok now ur being very classist, more so than the universities probably. and thats the major problem. st8 schul students can be just as negative about private schul ppl and vice versa. however, to get As u do need to work hard, no matter at which establishment. and why discriminate against ppl simply because their, as u say, 'mummy and daddy' pay for their education? they were born into this world like that, and thats the reason for privat4e schuls - to get a better education - so obviously a larger proportion of ppl there will gain better grades than at state schul. thus it follows that a higher proportion of ppl from private schul will gain the grades, and ideas etc to get into cambridge/oxford. howveer, they still accept ppl from st8 schul who do meet the requirements.
we cant get in2 the truths behind it all, but from my point of view it seems clear. they dont discriminate against classes as such, just against the ppl who dont meet ht requirements.

and i go to state school

Oh well. Take it from someone who has applied, and who knows many northerners (I met on the summer school) who have got in. Your friend is bitter because he/she got rejected.

I would disagree in that I think that they are more likely to accept a privately educated student in place of a state educated student with equivalent grades.

Ok whitley bay....known to the locals as 'sh*tley whitley' im afriad. not really too bad, m8 lives there n dad was born there, but best bet is for you to get a taxi to the Quayside - in particular Blu Bambu or Baja are the nights out at the min. (avoid the boat!) the girls will be ...more....decent for u! plus i think whitley, form what ive seen, has a large man to women proportion, so u probs wnt liket hat much! but if ur comin 2 newcastle, itll probs cost £20 for 5 of u to get to quayside, and ull have a much better night out. go to wetherspoons, long bar, buffalo joes (but only if goin to baja) and phaps revolution. blu bambu is definitely the best place at the min. if urcomin up when a levels are still on tho, most 18yr olds wnt b out much, but come up after 26th (think thats the last day of exams) and it shud b heavin again! hope u have a mint night x

I think you're way off the mark. If anything they'll be more likely to accept the state school student.
Anyway, it isn't all about predicted grades. Nearly everyone who applies to Oxbridge will be predicted AAA or AAB, so the interview is used to assess potential.
