Best Friend's Birthday

I'm not sure if this is in the right section, but H&R is always full of people giving advice, and it is somewhat related to relationships so hopefully it'll be okay here

Basically, next Friday is one of my good friend's birthdays. He'll be 20, so it's not like it's his 18th or 21st or whatever but because he never does anything big on his birthdays - I think he just stayed at home on his 18th! - we're planning a big night out in a city about two hours drive away (a couple of our friends have a house there, and the nightlife is much better than here!). We've been planning it for about a month or so now, and we're all really looking forward to it. It's sort of our big social event of the summer! And I know it'll mean a lot to all of us because we're all at different universities and don't get to spend as much time together anymore.

About a fortnight ago I applied for a weekend job. I hadn't heard anything after a week and a half so I kind of gave up on it, but this week I got an interview and then found out yesterday that the job was mine. In the interview it completely slipped my mind that I'd be away next Saturday and they're going to want me to work then.

So I don't know what to do now - I'll be absolutely gutted if I have to miss this birthday party because as I said, we've been planning it ages and it's such a huge thing for all of us, not least the birthday boy. On the other hand though, this job is important to me and I don't want to start off on a bad foot. I'll have only worked there for a week so pulling a sickie is totally out of the question!

My friends have said that when I go in for my training on Monday I should just explain to the manager that I've had something important planned for the Saturday for months but it slipped my mind during the interview (which is the truth) so I won't be able to work then. But am I justified in doing that? How bad does it look?

It's not much of a problem I know, it's just a trivial thing but I thought some outside opinions might help me decide what to do! Thanks in advance

im sure if u just explain it to them they will be understanding  altho u will come across some mean nasty employers (cough matalan cough) who never let u take time off, im sure if u explain the situation they will be ok about it
