3-5-2 u play neville and cole as wing backs, with 3 centre backs which means we'd have to play beckham, lampard and gerrard in central midfield

When you play 3-5-2 the back three are all centre backs not just one centre back!
I agree

We need someone behind Gerrard and Lampard, for sure.
They did quite well yesterday, tbh. And another player in behind will congest the midfield further, what with Beckham's centre-mid allusions and Cole's cutting in. 5 players and little offered in the channels isn't my idea of a balanced midfield? Keep those two ticking in the midfield for now - although they'd prefer to be kicking lumps out of each other - and prey that Beckham keeps his nose on the touchline and Downing returns from injury.

Does England have a defensive midfielder with a role akin to Makelele or Keane?

Hmm, I wouldn't agree they did too well together yesterday. They always looked uncertain, and if they had a Didi Hamann behind them they probably would've been more protected. That was probably the reason why England were playing a lil too deep? We need a Hamann/Makelele, so these two can go forward. They both have someone behind them at Chelsea and Liverpool, and that's how their managers get the best of them and they're used to that.

I don't think they work pretty well tbh. And now Gerrards injured too. Great.

I don't think so. Gerrard sat deep and was probably our most influential player. He got a rapport of sorts going with Lampard, but playing Crouch probably worked in that respect. Think of what we'd lose from another area if we played a DM - lest not forget that we don't even have an accomplished DM.

We know that a 4-5-1 can't work, I don't trust them with a 3-5-2.

I would only suggest Carrick for that role, but he can be hot and cold.

is there really no hope for Scotty Parker? because he is one of the most disciplined midfielders around.

I don't think Beckham did do it well, because when he was playing at the base of that triangle of players he was hitting 40 yard balls to S.W-P and Joe Cole, completely bypassing Gerrard & Lampard which didnt let them get into the game - which meant no creative play allowing Rooney to latch on, do a couple of defenders and slot some goals home.

Take him to Germany, but I wouldn't want him water-carrying. He's a good midfielder - better than Jenas - but he isn't a specialist DM as Carrick is/Butt was. Agreed about Beckham. Nice Hollywood balls, but it cuts out L&G.

Ah yes I forgot about him. He's very talented. Yes play him for defensive midfielder. I wanted Chelsea to keep him actually so yes play him.

I think the NI formation should have worked..but i've ened up with-

----------------------------------------------------------------------------Robinson-------------------------------------

-------------------G.Neville/Carragher-----------------Terry(c)-----------------Ferdinand---------------------A.Cole

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------Beckham------------------------Lampard---------------Gerrard-------------------------------J-.Cole

------------------------------------------------------------------------Rooney

-------------------------------------------------------------------------Defoe

A boring side, but probably what i'd pick

Terry(c) Campbell Carragher
Lol, aiming for the slowest defense in the competition? I don't really understand all these calls for Terry as captain. He isn't even among the first names on the teamsheet!

Englands team for German 2006 (in my opinion)

------------------Robinson----------------
G. Neville-----Campbell-----Terry*1----A.Cole
------------------------------------------
Beckham-----Gerrard-----Lampard----J.Cole*2
------------------------------------------
------------Rooney-------Owen-----------
*1 = or Ferdinand.
*2 = replace with suitable player if you disagree.

Back to basics!

Or Play SWP as a wing-back instead of Young. Then have Parker ready to replace Beckham when the job is done.
