If you can be bothered reading an article on the best young talent in the country......(you have to register on the website so I'll just paste it)........

Such is the obvious desperation to find a proper solution for England's left-sided problem, it seems that anyone with a half-decent left foot these days gets shoved forward as the answer.

Take the case of 20-year-old Stewart Downing, the latest proffered panacea for Sven-Goran Eriksson's headache. Around this time last year the left-winger was trying to make a name for himself in Middlesbrough's reserve side. Might be best all round, thought the coaching staff, to send him out on loan; toughen him up a bit, let him gain first team experience and see where that takes him.

It took him up the road to Sunderland where the player proved something of a revelation, only to be called back early due to injuries at the Riverside. Manager Steve McClaren welcomed back a different proposition.

More steady than meteoric, Downing's development has required careful handling. A bit early under the circumstances, you would think, to be nominating this Teessider as an answer for England, yet that has been the case over the last couple of weeks.

The trouble is, Downing has already shown enough this season to suggest he can write his own scripts. The text has been shaped by some sterling displays of old-fashioned wing play. He loves to run with the ball, commit his defender, then most crucially of all deliver an end product, be it a cross or a shot.

The latter result has reaped four goals already while the likes of Mark Viduka and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink can heartily vouch for the former. Boro's two main strikers, with 12 goals between them, have profited personally from that bulging supply line.

You could see it on Saturday during the victory at Charlton. Every time Downing curled in a tempter, whether it was accurate or not, the intended recipients applauded the idea. After all, regular service like that is gold dust for forwards.

One such cross actually led to the opener when Chris Perry made a mess of clearing what should have been a harmless under-hit ball. It just goes to show that any form of cross from the right kind of area will ask questions of defenders.

The Valley, it is true, did not witness one of Downing's more spectacular displays. There were times when his inexperience showed, when he wasn't quite sure when to release the pass. With a lead to protect, McClaren understandably replaced his young prodigy with 15 minutes left. Nevertheless, this corner of south-east London did see a burgeoning talent whose natural instinct to hug the touchline has lent Boro's midfield some pleasing shape and balance.

It helps enormously, what's more, to have someone of Frank Queudrue's ability and experience behind. The Frenchman's gritty defensive resolve provides perfect back-up for the youthful enterprise of Downing in full flow.

That particular sight has proved more than enough to alert the big boys, none more so than Manchester United where Sir Alex Ferguson, it is said, has his eyes on the winger as a long-term replacement for Ryan Giggs. A mature performance at Old Trafford the other week, topped off with a well-taken goal, would have added to Ferguson's admiration.

Eriksson's, too, no doubt. But you would envisage the Swede keeping this prospect in the Under-21s for now. It is a little too early for promotion to the seniors.

First of all, Downing needs time to develop at club level where a strong squad can allow McClaren the luxury, if need be, of dipping him in and out of action. That, more than anything, will help aid his progress.

In any case, playing for his beloved home town club should be enough to be going on with. Mum and dad were already huge Middlesbrough fans. Now with Stewart to cheer on, they must be having a ball.

Who said Robben and Duff couldn't play together? What a goal.

Downing will not only be the new Ryan Giggs, but Tony McMahon will be the new (right footed) Maldini, James Morrison will be the new Peter Beardsley, Danny Graham will be the new Alan Shearer and Bates and Hines will be the new Cannavaro and Nesta. And Lee Cattermole will be the next Wayne Rooney (seriously, this kid is hot).

Oh, and Danny Reed will be the new Joaquin.

I know. It's not so much pleasing as a Boro fan to watch them sometimes, but scary. It really is amazing just how good these kids are and how good they can be. The best thing about them is, they're not just all young kids, they're all English, and most of them from 'Boro. Wow. Honestly, give it 5 years....

Never underestimate the best player in the world

He had an average game, but Ronaldinho lives up to the decisive moments in the big games. Lets hope this is the confidence boost he deserves

I thought he had a really good game actually. Often looked dangerous and inspirational, just his set pieces were a bit poor. A big thumbs up for Barca from me. They absolutely dominated the game! They're starting to look really good again!

Trust me, he can be much better! Milan tactics were to defend, which helped us, but it's no easy task breaking a defence like that down. Deportivo are next!

Força Barça!

Lol, I know what he can do. And I still think he had a good game! True he wasn't quite at his best, but it was one of his best performances this season. He was very influential and you could really see his determination to get the team going. And then at the end, what a wonder winner!

Stop it!

I can't listen to this 'we'll be the best team in the world in five years because all of our youngsters are going to be superstars bla bla bla'

They won't! If they were that good they'd be playing now.

Yah

Juventus, Lyon, Chelsea, PSV, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and United are now as good as through. (Bold are actually already through)

No real surprises there, though Bremen have done well in a difficult group.
