how important is freshers week?

ok i know this may sound like a dumb Q but how important is it? the reason why im asking is cos I need to attend an important event that falls during freshers (15-17th sept - which is during the weekend) and wonder if i should cancel it or not.

i havnt ordered the freshers pack yet, but does any1 know what day the "society signups" take place?

thx

The Societies Fair is on the 13th and 14th Sept. You sign up for societies there... (if you play brass or wind or percussion instruments make sure you visit the brass and wind band stalls!)

During Freshers week you have to pick your extra courses, so you will probably have to be around in order to meet up with your director of studies, discuss your options, then attend the academic fair to speak to people about the courses themselves and then meet with your DoS again to finalise things. This is all fairly important, there's nothing worse than being stuck with a course you don't want to do.

I'm not sure what you freshers will do about matriculating as I think part (or possibly all) or it can now be done by post... but we had to turn up in person to register. You'll need to check about that.

There's all the obvious social things you'll miss too, but that isn't the end of the world if you're not that way inclined, but settling in to your new home while trying to attend lectures and tutorials can't be the easiest of things.

It probably can be done to miss freshers' week, but it'll be a lot of hassle trying to reorganise meetings and registration. I guess it depends on how important your prior engamement is. If I were you i'd attend freshers' week and return home for the weekend... (I see you're in London.. train tickets are fairly cheap if you book in advance) as nothing official happens during the weekend!Hope this helps

I'm being pressured by my mum to attend my uncle's wedding in Fresher's Week in Aberdeen and I can't be arsed going at all. It is on the Saturday of freshers week. I'm worried that I'll miss some really good events that day.

I don't want to go. My dad says it's up to me and doesn't really care to much if I don't go and my mum is all 'You have to go'. Grr... Aberdeen... Grr...

Well Freshers week at Edinburgh is actually a week which is good so if you go up the first day possible to move in (much recommended) then you should have done lots of socialising and registering by the saturday (assuming its the 2nd sat u miss - if you miss the 1st sat then youve got plenty of time to catch up). What you do in Freshers week is general crap, but looking back I'm still with the same friends I met then, and it can be a bit odd if someone turns up late. You can the mysterious flatmate that noones met. It should be fine and you should then settle in but it is a risk - one of those things that you'll prob never look back on but if summit goes wrong u'll regret it (unjustly probably) for ever ever! Basically I think what I'm trying to say is Freshers week is very important but you'll get away with missing the odd day of it. Ed x
